here's what i think about this year's dakar:

bikes - personally i hoped that depres will win once again. unfortunately his mistake and injury as a result placed him on second position. as a pole i hoped czachor will drive slightly better, he could do better than 14th. i bet fretigne was aiming little higher than 13th place as well.

cars - big bad luck of peterhansel and masuoka. after first part of the dakar where volkswagens were doing really great (by 8th day 4 of first 5 cars were vw) mitsubishi started to realise their evil plan and gradually take over the lead. i'm really surprised by the americans, hummer and chevy were doing really great as for the first time; i'm also surprised how good sainz was, if he hadn't had an accident, he could have been even on the podium.
looks like bmw gradually is becoming more and more powerful (new car this year - X3 based) but the accident of al-attiyah (only really good driver of the team) cancelled all the hopes and plans.

trucks - domination of tchaguin seems to be never ending. kamaz's didn't really have any competition this year, DAF could have changed that, but all their trucks were disqualified before the dakar actually started

    same as McRae.

It's seeing the unexpected in the sand and terrain that catches them out.
Hopefully Sainz will stick with it and keep the interest for a year two run and the experience should help him avoid gettign stuck and the inevitable "accidents"
