    Mid-engine Porsche??

Sorry if this is a repost, but I couldn't find anything in it. I read something in the paper this morning about the new Carerra S being a mid-engine...is that correct? That would be a BLAST to drive! Anyone have any information on this or a link or something? I tried google but wasn't having much luck.

If it's true, it sounds like a stupid idea. Why spend 40 years making a rear-engined car brilliant, then only to move the engine to the middle?

Because the Cayman isn't a 911? The 911 will ever have its engine in the back. Other Porsche's may have them at the front (Cayenne, 924, 944, 928, 968...) or in the middle (914, Boxster, Cayman...).

It's not true. As the link showed the new Cayman S is mid engined like the Boxster, but the 911 series remains rear engined.

Found the article I read (coworker still had the paper).

It's a 2006 Cayman S. Mid-engine 3.4-liter, flat-six boxer-style engine, 24-valve, variable valve timing and intake geometry; six speed manual; rear wheel drive.

Don't Mid-engine cars handle better? And I thought Porsches were Mid-engine cars already? Euro. cars are made for the AutoBan, so why don't they make it go as fast as it can without taking out the "feel" of the car.

Engine location doesn't guarantee good handling but weight closer to centre of car makes for better angular momentum control whcih CAN then make better handling.

Euro cars arent' made for autobahns, they're made for all our roads only some of which are motorway so we kind of get the best of both as they work damn well on straigh flat roads too - as long as you accept usually hgher revs on cruising.

Porsche 911s are rear engine - the trandaxle is in front of the engine.

    Oh. thanks for telling me.

But Porsche should make a front-engine car. That would be cool.

I wanted to bump this thread. Was at the auto show yesterday here in DC and saw what I believe was one of these.

    there were:
The 924, the 928, the 944, the 968 and then Porsche lost track by introducing the Cayenne.
