Well we have to be careful what is meant with "mid".
CLASSICALLY a front engine car has the engine in front of the passenger and a rear engine car had it behidn the passenger.
Then we had the introduction of MID engine where it went ahead of the rear axles but still behind the passenger.
Now with the introduction of FRONT engines pushed well back into the passenger cell we entered the realm of what was originally called "front mid-engine" to differentiate it from the "classic" mid-engine.
I'm old school, the current crop of "front mid-engine" are front-engine for me as they majority of the engine is ahead of the driver ( and may or may not have any part in the fornt axle line ).
The big difference in front and front-mid is the weight and mass distribution on the vehicle as front-mid is more aking to mid than it is front
It's an area fraught with interpretatino based on cars that were buitl rather than any detailed definitino created and agreed by engineering community. So the PR guys are laygin down the interpretations now Best to explain which you consider whicha dn then at least you'll get the asnwers you want

^^^ I also consider front mid-engined as a FR layout. Even though the engine might be behind the front axle line, it is still in front of the passenger compartment. I see front mid-engined as an evolution to better redistribute weight, just as Porsche's 911s have moved more mass forward. In the 993 the trasmission/engine sit further up than previous generations, moving more of the engine mass forward as well.
The McLaren SLR is probably the best. Others that come to mind: Honda S2000, Vanquish, Ferrari 575, and several BMWs.

^^^ Agreed - front is ahead of the driver.
My choices would have to be 612 (cuz I've driven it), Caterham 7 and I should think the best ever front engine car will be the 599GTB.

Honor. Courage. Commitment. Etcetera.
The Ferrari 275GTB/4, GTB, Alloy, Comp. were all revolutionary sports cars of their time.
In terms of modern Front Engine cars, I'd go with a E36 BMW M3.

I also agree with Matra's description of "Front Engine". I'm old school as well. I'll list some of my favorite front engined cars since "best" is highly subjective:
Ferrari 365 GTB
Shelby Cobra
1963 - 1965 Corvette
2006 Z06
Jaguar E-Type
SLR McLaren
Ferrari 575
BMW M3 (all versions)
Audi S4, S3 and 3.2 V6
Viper Coupe
Holden Monaro / Pontiac GTO
I've surely forgotten a few others...

Fords suck, Chevys rule, but its Ferrari that makes me drool
Nothing but quite alot of cars, though not many of them front engined and still in production.
