Best front-engine? Depends on what the definition of "best" is. By my own definitions, the '58 Cadillac and '56 Lincolns are the best, by the definition of this place, I'd say the Ferrari 250-series cars or the Aston Martins with the Tadek Marek straight sixes.

An it harm none, do as ye will
Approximately 79% of statistics are made up.
Hennesey Viper has to be up there, as does the SLR. For me the Monaro VXR 6.0 would be the one, a very nice car indeed, and somewhat of a first over here.
to me front engined is FR too, SLR front engined

ah the old nugget --- but it is FRONT-mid ( the new boy on the block) as opposed to real midOriginally Posted by johnnynumfiv

Nugget - good analogy imo!
ie: a nugget of real vs fools gold
'Real' = actual/factual so front-mid SLR is as "real mid" as rear-mid
Phew, THAT was the longest stretch of the Eglish language I've seen for a real time.Originally Posted by nota
Front-mid is NOT "real" mid by any stretch of the imagination as the modern PR usage forgets about the driver/passenger position

Sorry mate, your obfuscation does not convince - try imagining that this is about ENGINE position, NOT driver/passengerOriginally Posted by Matra et Alpine
Imo mid-engined is a mechanical description, pure & simple, meaning the engine is fully accomodated within the wheelbase. So as far as mid-engined goes, front-mid is as 'real' as rear-mid. It's a physical/spatial reality not modern PR
Seems to me YOUR Egish attempts to corrupt this definition to include where the occupants sit. Thus, following through with the distorted logic of your driver/passenger addendum, the only 'REAL' mid-engined vehicle must be one that has its engine positioned directly UNDERNEATH the occupants!

If you study the etymology then the terms front and rear were established long ago whe life was simpler and an enigne was either forward or behind the centre line fo teh vehicle - and obious front or back THEN mid grew from the need to describe mid-REAR as till then rear had MEANT REAR.Originally Posted by nota
It all started frmo a simpler desciption. The eingine in FRONT or in the REAR.
Mid got added and noy front-mid is added again.
Thankfully languages grow.
Study of the growth of terms can be fascinating.
Especially nowadays as marekting hype and PR efforts abuse the terms to mek what they offer seem better or equal
Yep and if they industry had ever found the need to talk about MID in the days when engines DID sit below passengers then it woudl have been used. But back tehn engine position wans't used in sales hypeSeems to me YOUR Egish attempts to corrupt this definition to include where the occupants sit. Thus, following through with the distorted logic of your driver/passenger addendum, the only 'REAL' mid-engined vehicle must be one that has its engine positioned directly UNDERNEATH the occupants!
You're taking a static today view of the terms and that's what trips up the understanding and creates the obfuscation
As long as you are willign and able to do etymological studies I've no problemLike you I enjoy debate and the corpse stirred anew, so veni vedi vici
