They can use it all over the car its just got to be formed differently, its got to rely on stiffness across many directions to get strength.

Panelbeaters love steel though cause its alot easier to work with.

So it might hurt the pocket
But if it's stiffer it's as strong? But with a lot less weight

Bottom line it is, it could be down to demand, if its harder to refine etc but thats something to ask someing in the mining/metalwork industry

Dont confuse stiffness and strength though....Stiffness of course is relative to flexibility.

So maybe that flexibility might take the impact of a crash better so the body doesn't get that sudden stop feeling as much. Like getting hit with a glove as opposed to bare knuckle.

No thats the thing, steel is more flexible than alluminium and as such, alluminium's stiffer. I dont know if youve ever seen alluminium bent or anything, but it just comes apart whereas steel can be beat back into shape alot easier and alot longer.

I'll have to admit i know jack about metals But it's not that obvious is it lol

So i guess of you were in a big enough crash the might be a ride off anyway, But if you got hit into the front guard @ 25kp/h would it shatter the guard.
I'm starting to worry about aluminium now.

Ill admit that I'm really behind...anyways after reading Drive's article on the VE ive gotten a little confused. There was a recent showing of the VE to fleet managers. Apparently they said that the VE was the most 'radically different' commodore they had ever seen. The commodore in the spy shots doesnt suggest this...does Holden have a surprise up their sleeve??

oh yeah and read my above post...that link doesnt work...well it does but it goes to nowhere

Probably cause of the wheel arch flares across the range.

As you say, fleet managers. This'll be the first time the Exec has any muscle to it

I wonder whether it's just going to be like the Peugoet 407 in Europe - Different for the sake of being different.

It'll have universal appeal, sure, but I don't think it's going to Move anyone.

Save for it having a smoking engine, good gearbox and decent bodykit...

Well Holden are hoping it moves someone...into showrooms, as theyve almost come out and said that if the exterior doesnt, the equipment list sure wont!

Great - Vain looking cars with nothing to offer on the inside.

Still, I guess it completes Holden's line up.....

Good from far but Far from good.

Well if they manage to achieve something like Ford did, like making the XR6 more attractive to fleets than the XT, then they could at least have something with style dominating the streets

But if theres no substance behind that style, then they're really ain't no point.

I don't think people buy the XR6 over the SV6 because it looks nicer - it's generally a better package, inside and out.

Without the substance I fear it's going to be another example of Mooney's 'how far can we really stretch the Holden badge' mentality - Near enough is good enough - and screw the competition coz we're cheaper.

Holden have for a good 8 years now sold the country's most popular car that arguably wasnt the best though. Even now, the severly dated VZ still holds a sales advantage over the BF and its got alot more to do with Holdens marketing etc than most other things. We can only hope that either a)Holden knows it cant sit on its arse anymore or b)The buying public open their minds
