Although this is rediculous, it's definately a genius scheme in making money.

If it goes through...someone will want to patent the "check" and "X" marks next...

I want to patent, giving someone the "birdie". Make the sign and pay a royalty.

Ptents'a re devious and VERY specific documents

What Cingular have managed to achieve is a patent on a smiley ON A MOBILE phone and the extension to haev a simple key option to include them in txt messages.

The stupidity of the patent system is THAT is an obvious extension of smileys used on computers but hte patent office don't spend the time or the expertise to properly evaluate and throw out most patents

Also, Nokia offered including icons in mobile phones 10 years ao. It only worked between Nokia phones but smileys were there. So another example of patentn stupidity is that Cingular have been granted a US patent on it despite their being prior art in the world community.

Patent offices are a waste of time and nowadays rely on someone bothering to take the patent owner to court to refute a patent. NOT what they were set up to do

( I've defended and fought my patents in courts around the world, I have to say the US is the worst and basicaly the one willing to pay the patent lawyers the MOST will "win" 9 times out of 10 !! One of those "corruptions" that can happen in free-market economies )

The list of stupid and pointless patents owned by IBM, HP etc is massive and growing daily. eg IBM own the patent to display informatin in forms on screen -- se the layout of UCP ? It contravenes that patent and IBM coudl shut it down if they wanted to !!!!

That's like Paris Hilton who asked patent on the saying: "That's hot!"...

I also remember Lotus asking for patent on the design of the Esprit, so that no (Asian) brand could copy it.
