The White Stallion : Won't Start

So it's 9:00 p.m., I go to take a delivery, turn the key in the ignition .. and hear nothing, except for a very faint tapping sound.

Before you tell me the obvious bits, I'll state the bits we tried:

    - Radio, Heat, Headlights turn on and are persistent. Horn also works.

    - Battery was tested with an ohm meter, came to be just fine.

    - Attempted a jump start w/ some cables, no luck.

    - AFAWK, the relays were fine.

    - Waited a half hour w/out touching anything, still no luck.

    - Jiggled the steering wheel and shifted/re-shifted the gears, nothing.

    Hypothesis: Starter is gonzo.

The Car: Pontiac Bonneville SE (MY: 1996) 3.2 L V6, Automatic

    Suggestions?

It's an auto. I just meant 'shifted gear' as in, Park => Reverse => Neutral => Overdrive => Drive => Drive (2) => Drive (1) and then vica-versa.

firt thing i thought of yes, the starter. You SHOULD hear a noise from the engine bay, if the starter works but something else doesn't. No sound, starter gone. try and take it out and test it.

Nice sugestion. Maybe the starter brushes are beggining to get stuck and will need replacement soon. Try to hit the starter with a hammer or something (no need to bring it to pieces) while someone is turning the key.

before you go out and get a new starter, check the wiring going to it, if a wire is lose or missing completly, this would deffinitly cause the problem your discribing. It would be a shame to spend the money and time to replace the starter when tighting a lose connection would do the job.
