    Fave engine note

Gotta be a Ferrari V12 (carbs or new) or an M power straight 6. Preferably an M3 CSL.

There's also a special somehting about a V8 - 360 CS or a Top Fueller will do thanks.

    Any thoughts?

Formula 1 racers. You just can't beat it. Street cars, I think I like a Dodge Viper V10 or a Ferrari V12.

Agree on the M Power straight 6. Straight sixes always seem to have a particularly rorty, racecar kind of sound. The TVR straight sixes are like the M Sport engines but with volume turned up to 11!

The old carb-fed straight-sixes in Jaguars and Astons of old also sound fab.

I guess I could probably go on and on naming great engine notes, but there is one particular kind of exhaust note that once you've heard in the flesh never leaves you, and that's the 3 litre V10s from the F1 cars in the past few seasons. Just absolutely stunning!

Oh if we're including race cars, it has to be an F1 V10. Especially (in some ways) at low revs when they made all those whooshing, spaceship type sounds. It was the 'range of their voice' too, lots of different sounds through the rev range - good ol' variable intake trumpets. I like the V8s, although they really only do pop, bang and rattle or ear-splitting banshee.

Does the the smell of unburnt petrol when you floor the throttle in a carb'd car legitimately count towards the engine note? It is only one letter out from nose after all!

Yeah, the more an engine feels like it's going to elicit some kind of involuntary bodily function the better! Be it the evaporation of an internal organ, or anything else.

Diablo V12. The 6.2 BMW V12 of the F1 is amazing, but I prefer the Bull's growl.
