I think you'll find the majority of concept cars are scrapped.
well on the topic of concept cars, they are hand-made so i think trashing them is a waste, and my music teacher got a ride in the actual concept of the NSX when it was new, he lives in an awesome neighbourhood and his neighbour was the president of Honda Canada, I'm pretty sure he's living off family wealth.. Anyways, he said that since concepts haven't offically passed safety standards they are supposed to get scrapped and aren't technically street legal..

I'd have thought that a majority end up in private collections and the car manufacturer's own museums. When I went to Gaydon, they had some concept Rovers there.
Well some do obviously, but i would guess that it isn't the majority of them, unless someone know's otherwise for sure..

Some of Ford's pieces were auctioned off a while ago- they kept a lot. I believe the 1992 Focus concept was in there, as was the precursor to the Ford Ka (the Saetta?), and Zig and Zag (possibly).Originally Posted by bmwpower
If you think about it, some offer landmark pieces of design. Mercedes Benz have undoubtedly kept the AAV to mark the area in history where they went downhill in quality. Nissan kept the R390 (also available as a production car) to show that they are capable of making exciting cars every so often. Presumably, they also kept the Pao and S-Cargo to show why some concepts should never see the light of day.
i doubt the zig and zag where scrapped, they where sold of auction in 2002 and also they where made in 1990 by ghia
I know they were sold... hence why I thought they wereOriginally Posted by Craiben
And they may have been made by Ghia, but Ford is in cahoots with Ghia (or they were), hence the upmarket "Ghia" models of the Fiesta, Sierra and Escort in Europe today. They still make a Fiesta Ghia, come to think of it
So Ford sold off what are technically their own concepts, because they are in league with Ghia.
I only know one Conceptcar, which is nearly destroyed: the TVR Speed 12 Concept

For the longest time, it was standard practice in Detroit to destroy concept cars and show cars when they were done with them. That's part of the reason they bring such high prices nowadays at auction: survivors are rare. According to the website where I got the pics of the 1970 El Gato concept that I posted in another thread, "it is not known if El Gato still exists but it's presumed to have been destroyed (standard Ford practice for show vehicles at the time)."
As far as concept cars that are known to have been lost, the 1957 Chrysler Norseman comes to mind, which was on board the Andrea Doria when she sank off Massachusetts. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Norseman)

porsche 989 concept

this was porsche's attempt to put their sedan car in production, but it never saw the light of day.....
I remember that. I remember liking it a lot when I saw it. However, Porsche's Panamerica concept did survive.Originally Posted by Craiben
I wonder what the selection process is for keeping concepts and destroying them. Can't be survival of the fittest- the 989 was a much better design than the Panamerica.
It is still existing. They have got it in a nice hall with the rest of the works collection (well, the rest which isn't in their works museum) and some more never seen concepts (4-door 928 and some).Originally Posted by Craiben
