i used to help teach (aikido) after i got where i wanted to go (skill wise),
one of the most amazing things is how easily most people pick aikido up.
there was a mother and son duo, the mother wanted her son to be able to protect himself at an older age (he was 12) and the only way he would do the series (unarmed) was if she was doing it too. by the end of three lessons they were sparing with the rest of the class (all had been present and in class for weeks).

the little kid went to my school before i left for high school so i knew how much he was getting bullied. anyway, one day the kid didnt turn up, i asked his mother why and she replied "he had his first fight today, and he didnt want to come because he hurt the other boys" both mother and son gave up aikido that night.

as said above - be careful with HOW you use what you learn.

aikido is excelent, ive got a bad back too, and i still manage to do the basic movements with no pain. I admit to getting into fights that could have been avoided, but this was to show the arse's that had been screwing with me most of my life i can actually hurt them back. i never used aikido to its full extent, all i did was get the particular bastard into a few pins and locks- NOT breaking bones as whats meant to happen)

that was enough to rid me of my problem, maybe you just need to show them you CAN fight back. rather then actually doing it.

Of those, karate. At least, that was the overwhelming martial arts favorite where I grew up.

Otherwise - I'm getting a concealed carry permit and a S+W Model 19, stainless finish, combat grips, 3" barrel and combat orange sights. Best of both worlds - shoots .38 Spl. for practice, .357 Magnum for knockin the bad guys down!
An it harm none, do as ye will

Approximately 79% of statistics are made up.
