    Fellas...

Thanks for the input, now I've got even more options to consider now... I'm def. leaning towards either the Camry/Accord option, or a good condition, low mileage Golf... I'll keep you updated!

    Cheers

Accord is your best bet, or a Civic.

We've run Hondas for a short while now, and they're very reliable and fun car to have around. I know they have an old-man image, but that's a poor stereotype.

Seriously. They also hold their value a hell of a lot better than something like a focus, especially when fuel prices are going up. They're more and more in demand these days.

This is my opinion and it's a hell of a good one.
But diesel costs as much as gas now....

personal experience: older late 80s early to mid 90s vws and audis have had lots and lots of maintenence problems. more personal experience: we have a 4runner, 2 corollas, and a tundra....no problems at all with any of them. i definitely recommend toyota.

As Ferrer said, they get better milage. Diesel may cost the same, but you'll go 800kms on a tank when the gas equivalent will do maybe 500kms. Also, they're far and away more reliable. VW Diesels regularly exceed 400,000+ kms without major troubles.

Based on what you're leaning towards m5child, a diesel Golf is your best option. Seriously, it's the best option. Make sure to get one with the turbo too.

Word of warning though. If you push the diesel hard and like to drive like your trousers are on fire, don't expect any kind of miracle, it'll be thirsty.

But still nowhere near as thirsty as doing the same thing with a petrol engine.

You'd be surprised. Possibly not as much, but not as far as you're thinking either. Altough I doubt americans do that kind of driving...

our TDI Jetta gets 48 mpg right now... that's pushing it quite hard around the city, and cruising on the highway at 80 mph...you can add a little bit of acetone to the tank to get about 2-4 mpg better...

Erm actually being European (or not) doesn't make it any good (or bad). Cars shouldn't be judged by their country of origin, and familiy cars less than any other type of car.
