Saw an R8 today, and i've gotta say it looked HOT. Was grey in color....talk about road presence!! The front spoiler on the HSV cars looks %1000 better than the ugly, squared-off thing on the SS. Nearly had an accident whilst 'rubber-necking" to check it out as it drove by. Much better looking than in the pictures i've seen!!

Alot of people have said the HSV's have pretty good road presence. I reckon the normal VE's dont have any at all.

I saw a VE Calais the other day. I love the car, but it just didn't stand out. Holden made a mistake by styling it too much like the VZ. Even the glasshouse is practically identical.

I think the detail design is what makes it so different - the stance is just phenominal and the design is very cohesive and crisp. I think it's a good looking car, esp. in Calais V guise.

the problem I see with it is the gumby bodykits the car's lugged with - the plain rectangular front intake on the SS - WTF? wheres the sculpture?

I think they do stand out at the moment but there designed so that they will eventually blend in. thats no bad thing - the Commodore is meant to be a default looking sort of car.

I'm waiting for the VE's update in a couple of years - when the car moves away from VZ styling cues and takes more of it's own style.

It's like there trying too leave some VZ so you never forget it's a Commodore. If they went all out they would have a new car with it's only links too it's predecessors being engines trannys and guard vent.

I think fpv_gtho pointed out sometime back that if they look too different, you start polarising buyers. Some will know what it is, others won't have a clue. Not a good move for such a staple car. Look what happened to the AU.

IF the AU was actually good looking, and more focussed on fleets, it would have been a different story and we wouldn't have the BA.

The VE is too close to VZ.

the AU was a mistake - it was a car caught between two very different styling trends within the Fo Mo Co and as such was a compromised vehicle.

the VE was designed to mimic holdens of the past - but with a fresh new edge. in that sense the vehicle succeeds in filling it's brief because you can pick it from a VZ but automatically know it's a commodore.

I dare say conservatism also sells cars - the old Astra is proof of that - deeply conservative car but with huge resale values and strong sales - and goes to show that sometimes conservatism pays. much like the AU shows that sometimes polarising your buyers is not the smartest idea.

IIRC, the AU was a victim of Ford's 'edge' design theme, as seen with the previous gen Focus (Which ironically was, at one point, the best selling car on earth)

It was a mish mash of the Ovoid look (Escort, Taurus) and New Edge (Focus, Ka).

This meant it was edgy at the tips but soft in the middle - a bad combo.

I still don't know why they made it look like the Tortus, They should have got good feedback from people that the Tortus was not liked, They sent back more numbers then what arrived, I'm some that bought them gave them back.
That should have sent warning bells off
