Surely you know that already if you're that big a car fan?

It's the McLaren F1, the purest expression of a car, possibly ever.

One of the fastest cars ever; bespoke naturally aspirated V12; as much load space as a 5 Series; timeless design (it seems); unique driving position; one more passenger than any other sports car; totally unrestrained by 'corporate pressures' and there's only a hundred of them.

    What more do you want?!

Its so hard to choose, i think the F40 would be up there too...along with the Elise...the F430 is sussposed to be amazing...NSX...Its really too hard to choose.

It depends on what a person's definition of "best" is. Example, if your into top speed, then the Veyron will be your best, handling then the Elise or Noble ect.

    lol or tire walls...

We all know if we're speaking in terms of best nothing is worth to be seen with the Range Rover. A car so beautiful it was displayed in the Louvre with the Mona Lisa. A car so capable it's the only car to cross some jungle in the northern area of south america (sry the name elludes me now). A car so luxurious it could be a 5 star hotel. Get the point??

I love how you make the decision for all of us, lol.

Although I'm sooo tempted to agree with Kiplings choice, I'd have to say the Lotus Elise is my pick. Fast, fun, affordable... it's all there in a car that is pure enjoyment at it's finest.

^^ Hmm, the Viper: one of the most important for the US car industry maybe. And you've got to love the spirit behind it.

Taking the resulting machine at face value, I do love the Elise; the F430 really is incredible in every way; Caterham 7 is probably my all time fave... but I just can't take my mind of the completeness of the F1.

Here's a good question... money aside (because that was always outside the F1 remit), can you think of some down points of it?

I can think of a couple:

Getting in the driver's seat.. although I guess you'd get it right eventually.

I bet that central driving position makes overtaking a bit rubbish, but it would be the same wherever you drove it.

    Err.....

    You can't buy one?

NSX, purely because it has no handling vices, is comfortable, and gave ferrari a big kick up the backside to make the 355 so much better than the 348...

The best car ever? Well surely it has to be an Aston Martin. To be exact a DB9. The DB9 is exactly what an Aston is. Cool, fast and drop-dead gorgeous. Sure its not as fast a Ferrari F430 or a Lamborghini Gallardo but its way more comfortable and luxurious. And the icing on the cake:Remember its an Aston which means it makes you look and feel like James Bond, which frankly, no other car in the world can do.

SUV drivers can't see you, even when they are looking where they are going AND the phone isn't welded to their ear, because the car is so low.

Its probably very noisy, tyre roar and a loud engine droning while driving steadily don't make for a pleasent drive. I admit pleasent driving wasn't high up on the list of things it has to do.

According to Autocar it has terrible lift at high speeds.

    Yes you can.

You just need to know the right people.

Not a car for shrinking violets, could hardly peel my eyes away from it today...
