Water injection was used on the spitfire plane at one stage. Under full throttle it was reported to give the Rollsroyce engine about another 100Hp. But again it was used under heavy loads.

Apparently they also used nitrous oxide in the engines so when climbing vertically it didn't stall as quickly.

ONly in night fighter and photo reconnaisance versions where high altitude and increased thrust for short periods was advantagous.
