In 1987 BMW put the E30 M3 into production with 200hp out of 2302cc. By 1989 the Evo II was validated with 220hp and emissions compliant.
    This is 96hp per litre.
Honda make seriously good engines and the V-tecs are probably some of the best on the planet.
But they aren't the only ones capable.

Just off the top of my head so to speak...........

1] Japanese cars are consistently the worlds most reliable.
2] They outsell most other makes.
3] They gave us the Datsun 240Z, 260Z and 300ZX, the Nissan Skyline GTR, Toyota Supra, WRX, Mazda rotaries, Mazda MX-5, Mitsu Lancer Evos, even the classic Toyata dohc engine (thankyou Yamaha).
    4] Also the Nissan 350Z....
5] They designed and developed engines for Ford Europe (Zetec SE were designed & developed by Yamaha)
6] They designed and developed engines for Ford USA (32v V6 fitted in the 80's Ford Taurus SHO if I've got the name right).
    7] They don't leak oil.
8] They are lower maintenance than most other cars.
9] Honda make some of the best racing engines on this planet.
(Ferrari poached HRC to get it's F1 engine running better and with reliability).
10] Toyota F1, with some Yamaha input aren't that far behind either.
11] The world's best selling car is...........a Toyota!
12] p.s. they don't really care if they are considered boring or ugly. They are making and delivering what the vast majority of people want and are laughing .............all the way to the bank.

Toyota is the highest grossing automaker on the planet. GM is bigger still (for now) but toyota makes more money!

    okay...... that was random...
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

I think the question we should be asking is: "What is so good with American cars"

Good point. Your arrogant and indolent post just changed my mind about UCP. Which now sucks.

And why are Asian cars getting this flack? They may be boring sometimes, but they're cheaper and more reliable than a lot of other imports or domestics. Hell, I drive a 16 year old Toyota that's never needed maintenance and has features compareable to a well equipped Cobalt.

What's so good wit Asian cars? ...

When they are old and battered, people who hate them still rely on them to get around.

This has been explained countless times.
Saying an engine is 'good' because it makes high hp/l is like saying an engine is good because its painted red.
Peak hp/engine displacement means squat performance wise, real world things like weight, physical size and torque curve are things that should be looked at.

edit: heres an example, lets take the S2000s engine again. Which is better, the 2.0L version making 240hp or the 2.2L version making 240hp? The 2.2L is the exact same engine, weight and dimensions but it makes more usuable power (low and midrange). But zomg the 2.0L version has more hp/l oh nooeee!!!!

hp/weight is a much better yardstick
