I missed EVO no. 93 (July 06) in which John Barker gave a greatest hot hatch list (in the "Ask the experts" column). I'm very curious to see what he put in it, so can any one please transcribe it? Thx....

His list was as follows....
1. Renault Clio Williams
2. Renault Clio Trophy/Cup
3. Pug 306 Rallye
4. Pug 106 GTI
5. Mini Cooper S
6. Pug 205 GTI 1.9
7. Golf GTi MkI (or 16V MkII)

has anyone read the latest EVO??...The supertest was sheer brilliance and the test between the Macca and Bugatti was quality..Each edition of EVO is nearly always better than the last...Though beating this edition will take something really special

Pug 106 Gti and Saxo VTS would be considered the same car, wouldn't it?... 'cause I own one ATM...

I'm not an EVO reader, but was there any reason why they left out the Civic Type R?
As great a car as it is, the rest of them have that little something extra.Originally Posted by NSXType-R

A shame.
However, a 306 GTi-6 would ring my bell anyday!
The 306 Rallye almost the same car.
The Clio V6 is the obvious best hot hatch ever.
As much as I love it, and as much as I would love one, IMO I don't really think that qualifies as a hot hatch. Yes it has a hatch back but, like the Cooper Works GP, anything without rear seats loses the most important thing a hot hatch should have along with all the driving stuff... useability and practicality. You should be able to own one as you only car, that you drive every day. The V6 doesn't have that.Originally Posted by h00t_h00t

Its still technically a hatchback because it doesn't a have a boot, just an opening (hatch) at the back to access space behind the seats.
However by the same definition many much larger cars can also be called hatchbacks.
PPC - Put a V8 in it!
The 306 Rallye had the same bodyshell and engine, but it had no part-leather/alcantara seats, air-con, split-folding rear seat, or real badgesOriginally Posted by h00t_h00t
There are no back seats.Originally Posted by h00t_h00t
I was really trying to quantify the difference between a Hot Hatch and a performance hatch back. The Clio V6 is more of a sillouette racer than a Hot Hatch, i reckon.

When they talk about hot hatches, they shouldn't forget one of the first ever: the Alfasud. But this was about FWD in general, wich explains the Barchetta being there.
Money can't buy you friends, but you do get a better class of enemy.
Barchetta? I can't see it on the list And Barchetta can't be called a hatchback under any circumstancesOriginally Posted by McReis
It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.
