Maybe he preferred death over being taken to Guantanamo Bay....
Hitler was elected democratically as well ...
If you should see a man walking down a crowded street talking aloud to himself, don't run in the opposite direction, but run towards him, because he's a poet. You have nothing to fear from the poet - but the truth.

It's odd though to state you like Bin Laden and then call for peace.

So you are anti-american, hate GWB, and think that because Chavez is anti american you should join his crusade?

    Here's some food for thought.

    1. He's not only on a first name basis with Fidel Castro, they are personal friends and share their anti american vision. That's Ok, so do most European people.
    2. There was a referendum to over throw him after his second year of government. I cannot say if he manipulated that or not, I'm just saying not all Venezuelans support him.
    3. PDVSA, the national refinery stopped for months as means to pressure him. He had no second thoughts about firing everybody that didn't yield. He took control of the company and uses it as his cash machine.
    4. Coming from the military he put military or ex military in almost every high official post, be them qualified or not.
    6. He has expropiated big muti nationals and wealthy families, with no reason.
    7. He has intervened the foreing exchange market. That is nobody can take money in or out with the approval of CADIVI, which is run, by military. They take a cut of 25% to approve your transactions. I know this for a fact.
    6. This year he was ranked in in top 500 richest in the world by Fortune, with US $800 million as net worth. All taken away form the Venezuelan people.
    8. He just ordered a billion worth of arms.

I mean, this guy is no joke! Please don't take him lighty...

my point would be that comments coming from Americans in the direction of Mr. Chavez should be seen in historic context, where the USA always considered the Caribbean and Latin America as their playground (also a Democrat attitude), and anything emerging like a socialist government was sooner or later be faced with a "corrective" measure. How long will Bolivia's current leader stay in charge?

He expropiated french, spanish and brazilian oil companies without regard for international treaties, so I don't think much.

Just a few things. There was this referendum which he apparently won. Saying that not all people support him is a normal result see also the uSA). That PDVSA shut down to force his retirement is hardly a democratic act, and (like the air traffic controllers during the Reagan period) mass firings could be expected.

"he has expropiated big multinationals and wealthy families for no reason"....
just ask yourself the question where they got their money from...from the same Venezolean people that you so commendably introduce in your point #7.

So he ordered a billion worth of arms, (The amercain congress/senate just approved an additonal 63 bln for the "war on terror"). One billion dollar corresponds to about 2.15 mln tonnes of oil (at 65 $ per barrel), which is less than 2 percent of the annual production. Of course there are much better ways to spend that amount but things should be put in perspective.

You mean you do not do much thinking or do you think he will not stay in charge very long?

I'd say it is a fact that Bin Laden does not preach peace.

i suppose you are right, i dont like the way he implements his ideas although at least he is open about what he wants to do whereas certain countries with certain leaders are so much more secrative and much more deadly/scary because of it....

I'm surprised Niko hasn't said anything in this thread. He's probably so pissed off he can't see straight.
