The most important thing is to gain something personally from the failed relationship. I had a girl that I was just crazy about but she was never really willing to put as much into the relationship as I was. Eventually we broke up -- and I'm sure it was a coincidence that it was just a couple days after Christmas when I'd gotten her a bunch of gifts. I was absolutely DEVASTATED. It took me months to get over it but what I learned was that it's a very self-destructive thing to be involved in an unequal relationship. If one person is taking it seriously and the other is not, it's almost certainly doomed to fail sooner or later.
And so the next girlfriend I had -- who was to become my wife a few years later -- and I started out slowly and I made a point of keeping my emotions in check. And it was a good thing that we didn't just fling ourselves into anything. She was coming off a very ugly divorce and I, off the relationship I was talking about above. So we both were careful and now we've been married for over 20 years.
End of sermon. Be good to yourself for a while, and whatever you do, don't blame yourself for everything. Some relationships simply are not meant to be.
