    DSLRs?

I've been thinking recently about saving some cash and getting a DSLR, but I have no knowledge of the different brands and there offereings, (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax etc...)

I am a casual picture taker, but I have a passion for great photos, so the DSLRs really appeal to me (lots of lenses, nice high res pictures, advantage of digital) I don't need the best one though, or the absolute cheapest either...

So far I've been thinking either a Nikon D40 or D80...(or D50 - D70) but again I don't know alot so some suggestions on what some other good ones, would be nice ...

Nothing over $1500 would also be good

Well in a few years you are gonna be saying to yourself, "wouldn't it be nice to have that [insert amount you blew on a camera here] to get [something more important than a camera]".
I've been kicking myself in the ass for doing the same thing you are thinking of doing.

Gotcha. I'm a 35mm guy and my camera was free, so I shall now exit from the thread.

Uhh yeah, Digital Single Lens Reflex.

Well I can't see myself wanting anything more expensive...and $1000 isn't a massive amount of money. I'm planning to go to University so I won't need a car for awhile either...

I wouldn't get a D40, it's really stripped back and your lens choice is limited. It just doesn't seem that brilliant to me.

www.dpreview.com << very in depth reviews of cameras, their side by side comparison is also handy.

I have a film SLR, so I can't really comment on any of the new DSLRs, but my advice would be to be cautious of how much you spend. If I had bought a SLR back in high school, I would be in a lot of trouble now, because my photography course at University is film during the first year.

Buy one of the cheapest SLR, like a 350d. Then, if you find you're really into shooting, buy some serious lens. Believe me: you don't need nothing better than the cheapest SLR form either Canon or Nikon.
Money can't buy you friends, but you do get a better class of enemy.

    definitely a nikon d40

im spending the extra money for a d80 but seeing as your looking at a more casual camera then a d40 is perfect
