'World's Fastest Production Car' record holders

A week ago, I set out to make a comprehensive Record Holder's list, however there have been several confusing as well as contradictory statements. So, I need your help in improving this list which starts as:

    Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic - 1935 - 187 km/h
    Jaguar XK120 - 1950 - 120mph 192 km/h
    Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing - 1955 - 241 km/h
    Studebaker Avanti R3 - 1962 - 170mph
    AC Cobra GTM 777F - 1967 - 166mph 265 km/h
    Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona - 1968 - 170mph 272 km/h
    Lamborghini Miura P400S - 1969 - 172mph 275 km/h
    Aston-Martin V8 Zagato - May 1986 - 183mph 300km/h
    Porsche 928 S4 - August 1986 - 176mph
    Porsche 959 - 1987 - 197mph 315 km/h
    Ferrari F40 - 1987 - 201mph 321 km/h
    Lamborghini Diablo - 1990 - 323km/h
    Jaguar XJ220 - 1993 - 220mph 354 km/h
    McLaren F1 - March 1998 - 241mph 384 km/h
    Koenigsegg CCR - February 2005 - 243mph 386 km/h
    Bugatti Veyron 16/4 - September 2005 - 253mph 403km/h

Has this actually been independently verified?

Not a record until it is.

    just wondering about these three.

    1) I'd read somewhere that the miura hadn't ever gone 172 as it became unstable at high speeds
    2) this figure I think is disputed a lot!
    3) 216mph for this one

i may be wrong on all three counts, feel free to correct me!

    good job though

I believe the XJ220 did 217mph with Martin Brundle at the wheel, but it was on a banked oval. Apparently if you correct for the losses involved through tyre scrub from constantly turning on the oval then it equates to 220mph on the straight. So it never literally hit 220 but they claim it did on a technicality.

Why do I remember it as 218? Whatever 1mph is negligable. Didn't they have to take the wing off?

All they did was tape it down at the seams. It doesn't really have much of a wing anyway.

    Ccr

Have to agree with hec16, the Bugatti has never officially been recorded as the worlds fastest car, whereas the Koenigsegg CCR has.

If you want to simply take manufactures beliefs then the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo is the fastest in the world at 260mph (418kph)...but again, this has never been official recorded...so the Koenigsegg takes the trophy on this one.

What's the point of being the fastest car anyway? The only reason for it is bragging rights and that it sells cars. In this case the Bugatti has won because everyone believes it to be the fastest, even though it doesn't have the veracity of Koen or the hypothetical top speed of the S7. As an enthusiast I really don't care which car has the official record at the moment.

Same goes for the CCR, it apparently had a few hundred RPM left in top, but the banking wouldn't let it hit the redline.

The XJ200's 354kmh run was done without cats fitted, so it made more power, IIRC with them its around ~330kmh.

Also, about a week before Koenigsegg got the record, 9ff got a like 0.7kmh top end less at Nardo.

And finally, I belive that VW has run the Veyron up to top speed, why wouldn't they, and have the official record setting run planned for some time very soon.

Don't forget the '69 Dodge Charger Daytona, 426-Hemi... 180+ mph. And for only less than $5,000 (original retail price).

Hi fleet, nice to see you back.
The Daytona can't go on this list because I coudn't find any independent tests to verify this claim. I remember a issue of Motortrend waaaaay back carrying a report on it and the Super Bee....but I can't seem to find it.
