Sign of the times
Spare a thought for the humble road sign. It's accused of being unfair, badly placed and difficult to see... not to mention getting regularly defaced by spraypaint-wielding scallies.
And now the road sign has been convicted of sexism as well. A Spanish town council has vowed to banish sexist undertones from its highway signage by converting half of all its road signs and traffic lights to show female figures.
"In this way, the sexism which until now has seen only masculine figures appear in traffic signals will be brought to an end," said the council in an official, and possibly slightly mistranslated, statement.
We'd always thought of road signs as fairly androgynous, but perhaps they're different in Spain. Maybe the little roadworks man sports a builder's bum and a Mohawk? Can any expats set us straight on this?
And what's next - a ban on manhole covers?
This is just stupid
