    Faulty Mileage Calculation?

The Touareg is showing around 9,300 miles, and we just got it 7 months ago with 82 miles on it. We all agreed none of us has driven it anywhere near enough to rack up 18,000mi per year, as its been driven the same amount as the previous car, but seems to be getting miles much faster.

Could it be the part that records the miles is faulty or miscalculated? My dad mentioned he saw an article on VW having optimistic Speedo's, could it be related to that? Has anyone heard about this problem before? Or is it best to just take it in to the dealer and get it checked out?

Does it have the same wheels on it that it was originally (from the factory) delivered with?

Most likely the odo is set up for KILOMETRES !
RTFM for setting it to miles something like .... Use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel and scroll all the way down to units, press the wheel and set to miles..

    Hopefully it's that simple !!!
You'd have to have monster truck wheels on to double it

Or you could always run the tank almost empty and see how far you go. Then confirm it with the trip meter to see if it truly is right or wrong.

    yeah the standard 19" alloys

matra..."rtfm"? it's reading out as miles, so i suppose it could be set in kilometres but is reading out as miles?

a hybrid of NSX's and coolieman's ideas, i think im going to plot out a course ( on map point, tells me the distance), drive it, and see if the two measurements match up.

I'll throw a third option in the bucket.

Drive for 15 minutes at 60 mph, and see if the trip clock reads 15 miles. In this case, I'd set the cruise control exactly at 60 mph though.

"Read The F*****g Manual" I did have a smiley !!
hmmm, unlikely then if the electronic display has the word miles that it's that. But no harm in swithc it to kms for a wee bit and switching back "just in case" -- the equivalent of ctrl-alt-del ??
do the measured test - lots of options given on how, chose the simplest.
The article your dad remembers was likely about the way VW respond to the German law that requires a speedo to NEVER under-read the speed. So they design them to over-read so that if there is any variability it still means it's never illegal. But afaik it is designed NOT to affect the odometer.

Oh yeah. Once you go metric... you can never go back!

Everything is so damn precise! 1000 mm a metre, 1000 metres a kilometre, that shit is off the hook! You can even spell it metre or meter!

    That shit is versatile!
