Not to turn into Drakkie...but...while Merrill's composition and subject is pretty creative and I like it alot, it just kind of blends together a little too much for me, not enough contrast and kind of underexposed. Plus I like fish alot. Just my reasoning anyway.

I find it gives a smooth and soft effect that I like. But it's only my opinion.

No, it needs a little PPing. A straight desaturation from a colour shot rarely turns out as well as one that was exposed from B&W when taken or one with a little fiddling in *insert favourite program here*

i think merrill's is awesome. i thnk it ends up looking like a painting. the subject doesnt look real, so the end product is very surreal.

Never EVER just desaturate to get a B&W. Always use the LAB conversion method or the channel mixing method.

You could aways give half a point to each.

Which was my point. If I decide a shot is better in B&W I do it in RSE whilst processing the RAW files by desaturating and playing around with the contrast till I gte something that I like the look of

Merril's is way too underexposed. If there were more photographical knowledge with the voters Speedy's wouldve won hands down.

Eh? It's not really that underexposed.

And why would "more photographical knowledge with the voters" have ensured Speedy's victory? It's just a picture of a fish in a tank, whilst Merril's is interestingly composed to give something, well, interesting to look at.

It really is underexposed, its terribly dark and gloomy. Maybe the ISO setting was wrong. Either way, a photo like that would benefit from using flash or external lighting and maybe then it'd be the winner. Because it does have the potential because of its composition.

On the other hand Speedy's shot is vibrant and sharp. The depth of field is used well also. I know how hard it is to get a good shot of a clownfish when not using an underwater kit. The glass distorts the view of the fish and they never seem to give you the right opportunity to get a good perspective of them. But its done really well. Its clear and lighting is next to perfect. I can say all of this from a completely unbiased view. If the rest of the voters could look at all of these points then the voting would be made with more knowledge of what makes a good photo.
