    Serious UK matters

The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.

The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver.

A non-working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month.

On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times.

They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit you can expect a NIP with your monthly bill.

If you care about our freedoms and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website.

    http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/

Please pass this on to anyone who owns a car/motorcycle. It affects them.

A few years ago, something quite similar(not completely) was proposed by our government as well. Due to enormous protest, they blew it off. Good luck guys...

hasn't Blair just indicated that he wants to continue the war on terror? He will track all of them down.

Road Pricing in Holland is likely to be introduced in 2011-2012...

I can't believe they really want to introduce that...

Sounds pretty nuts to me. I guess having 2 cars or cars that are nice to drive, will be absolutely pointless in the future.
Being probably the country with more car nuts, if english people can't stop that from happening, no other nation will.
This is very sad for every conscious car lover, and probably a consequence of some others stupidity.

You've summed it up in a nutshell there.

My Dad and I are collectively enthusiastic about cars- enthusiastic enough to be buying ourselves a 'Sunday car'- something small, fast and a classic that we can take out and have fun with on holidays.

We won't be able to do that with the new 'laws'. They tax us when we earn money, they tax us when we spend money, they tax us when we save money, they tax what we put in our lungs, what we put in our stomachs... anything else??

It just upsets me. My career as a driver has only just begun (OK, so maybe it wasn't the best start...), and I don't want it compromised because the government 'needs' moneymoneymoneymoneymoney.

It's worse There is aplan to charge for vehicles on SORN too.
With 9 cars, most currently on SORN that woudl be grand larceny !!!!
Expecting to get paid money for a car NOT on the road is insanity

    That, at least, scary.
If I had to pay for my Fiat I probably would have sold it by now.
There are also plans here to charge the usual road tax on cars that are kept away in a garage. I have friends with over 30 cars an they are preparing for the pain of selling most of them. The classic car market will most surely suffer a drop with this.

I find it correct that as long as the car is officially road registered (and in Holland the license plate stays with a car, so no silly trades in "cherished plates") it should pay road taxes. Of course if you don't use the car you can report that and the car will keep its license plate but your don't have to have the annual MoT test. However in case you are caught on public roads you will receive a hefty fine.

Classic cars over 25 year old are tax-exempt.

The proposed system in Holland will most likely try to charge people according to road use. That would mean that fixed road taxes as we know them now will be abolished (I pay 1300 Euro per year).

Yeah sorry ... SORN is a declaration that the car won't be used on the road. I have to tell them every year about my Bagheera "bits" and currently the Espace and the Alpine. THe SORN lasts for a year. If I dont' TELL them each year then I get an immediate £40 "fine". It is a pain in the ass for all car collectors in the UK AND to then suggest that we shodul ahve to PAY each year just to be abel to keep our car in our garage - even if in bits - is as I'd said insanity -- but typical of our current government.

Previous administration did this and then Labour got in and froz it. So if your car is pre 1973 you don't have to pay road tax. but 8 years after it was introduced a 1974 car STILL needs car tax despite being 32 years old !!!

Why I like HOlland. In the UK the proposed charging system is in ADDITION to our annual "road tax"@( THough 1300 Euro -- ouch. Ours varies from £100 to £220 dependant on CO2 emissions.

What do you expect from the same Tony Blair who laughed at the idea of seperating Scotland and England, because they've been together for 300 years.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

F****ing ridiculous. For my Dad who does around 20,000 miles anually who already pays alot for fuel and a fair amount on tax and insurance this ain't good. What is it with our Government!?!?!? Big Brother is certainly watching. As the recent Peugeot 207 TV Ad Campaign states, you are seen by cameras over 300times a day aleady!!! I'll give them something to watch, not a 207 but balls that they can lick on!
