Tell how does that work, the "getting accepted" part of going to university over there. Here you just chose what you want to do and do it. They can't refuse you. The only schools that have to accept you are certain art schools who require you to have certain skills.

well like your art schools they don't accept just anybody, they expect you to have a certain amount of previous education and qualifications (i.e. you may need to have completed chemistry, physics etc to be able to succeed in your course.) it is tertiary education, after all, they can't teach you the basics

of course, if you have money, you can just pay upfront and do any course you want.

But doesn't everyone learn all the basics in secondary ? Or is it like the american system where you can pick what you want to learn. We have a fixed course system so that everybody has the same basics*.

*You also have technical and professional schools where you learn less theoretical stuff. Things like woodworking, mechanics etc. People who graduate from those schools don't always have access to tertiary education unless they do some extra courses.

Just informing.. I'm thinking of moving to Oz one day..

yes, you have to learn maths and english etc, but things like physics and biology are electives during high school as unlike maths and english you don't need them to get into a lot of courses. AFAIK, foreign students simply pay their tuition fees to enter the course and thats it.

Basically the idea is that you have obtain a high enough mark to get into uni here, called your UAI (University Admissons Index) score. Different courses have different minimum UAIs, and they go up and down each year depending on available places vs applications. For example, the year I started at Uni (2005) to get into my course you needed a minimum of 76, I got 84.05 so I got in easy on a Preliminary round offer.

This is because there's only a limited number of places in each course, and ensure that people who got in can apply themselves hard enough to do well at uni studies. Though if you don't get in you can do things like wait until you're 21 and enter as a Mature Age student, or, many unis offer courses to show that you can apply yourself to uni and get you ready for it. Or if you can afford it and the course you want to do allows it/has places for it, just pay the full fee (for me it would've been close to $15,000AUD upfront) and get in.

As for prerequisites, they're actually called Assumed Knoweledge. The course assumes you know what you would've been taught in college in those subjects so they don't have to teach you from the beginning, though for most courses it's just basic English studies or basic maths. That's because not everyone studies the same thing in yr 11 and 12 at college, everyone has different majors and minors (i.e I did Music, Media Studies and Physics, not exactly helpful for Computer Science or Chemistry)

As I said, my course is going to cost me about $15000AUD I think. Different courses cost different amounts, there's different bands of courses, i.e my sisters Nursing course is Band 1 (IIRC) because it's a national priority.

Not a whole lot. I think the cost for NSW/ACT who use UAC is about $100 IIRC. But they do all your applications for all unis and do all the offers.
