    Car Audio

If i were to get these subwoofers:

    http://www.tweeter.com/product/index...entPage=family

which are 300W "RMS" (no idea what that means) I would get 2, so that means I need at least a 600W amp, right? Or do I need more wattage to power the other speakers?

I really have no idea how all that stuff works, only that for 2 subs, I need a new amp.

RMS means root mean square, which is pretty much the average output your subs will have over time as they get older and are used frequently.

As for the amp, it depends on if you plan on upgrading your normal speakers in the front or back (depends on the car). You need to take into consideration channels also.

    channels...?

I dont plan to upgrade the other speakers, because i will probably only have my first car 4-ish years and dont want to sink $2,000 when it's all said and done into car audio stuff on it.

i have 2 12's that are about 400 rms and i have a 1000+ watt amp powering them both. RMS on the amp is like 500. If you go off 2 channels you will be fine with about any amp, bridging the subs is where you will blow them. A 600 watt amp would most likely sound good, as long as it all gets done right.

EDIT: I have about a $1000 in my truck. Stupid. And those JL's are good subs, if your going to spend money on good subs, spend money on a good amp. Check out best buy, thats where i bought my rockford phosgate 5002 amp. I love it.

The wattage of your speakers should be more than your amp, or you'll get clipping on really hard hitting stuff.

under powering subs isnt good for them either though. you are right though quiggs. trying to match the sub and amp is usually the best way to go. Some times its trial and error, ive had 3 amps (kicker, dual, and rockford), 3 different 10's (1 mtx, 2 rockfords) and 2 12's (1250watt infinity's). Now im finally set on a amp and subs. After almost a year of different stuff. Now i just got a amp for my doors, dash and tweeters that im hoping to put it this week. 6X9's are getting put in my rear doors instead of the 6.5's maybe, its alot of cutting but i dont care. myporsche, check out your local dealers and ask questions. The more knowledge you have the better your speaker system will be.

But I'd rather underpower them, since a lot of companies underrate their stuff (amps especially) to begin with. And you're more likely to kill a speaker prematurely from overpowering it than underpowering it.

^^^ very true also. my amp is almost 500 watts under rated. i got a sheet that they tested it at, it was tested at about 1600 watts.

EDIT: max power that is. bridged at 2 ohms i believe

Make sure you don't get a crappy box. A bad box can make the best subwoofer in the world sound muddy, and it can also make an "economy" subwoofer sound pretty good. I would recommend a closed-box setup. Mine sounds very tight, and my amp has the power to slam when I feel like it Alpine all the way.

I paid $80 for the box alone.
