    4wd access only

Meanwhile in South Australia, more than 20 vehicles were either buried up to their roofs or floated away when a king tide engulfed a group of fishermen parked on a remote beach.

The anglers were taking part in a competition at Salt Creek, organised by the Lion's Club of Kingston, when the tide rose dramatically on Saturday night, stranding the vehicles and forcing the owners to flee.

Most of the vehicles were submerged by sand as the anglers watched from nearby dunes.

There were reports that a four-wheel-drive Mercedes floated out to sea from the beach, 220km south of Adelaide.

Excavators were attempting yesterday to dig the vehicles out.

"It (the tide) just came up, and once the vehicles go down in the sand the suction just holds them in and they can't move them," competition organiser Peter Cooper told ABC radio.

Several of the anglers were treated for hypothermia after a night camping in the dunes.

Damn, is it me, or can Australians find a way to party anywhere!

The car's half buried and they're enjoying cold beer.

Idk if that's just an Australian thing. If I was stuck in the sand I'd probably down beers with some friends too.

We have fished down there for many years, it is always 10 – 20 degrees C colder than Adelaide and last weekends weather was feral. Cold, raining and very strong winds so it would have been foul on that beach anyway. We once camped there and a few guys had their cars on the beach and slept in swags by them. One large wave came in at night and took them for a bit of a ride. Had they not had a tarp around them they may have been washed away. The rest of us stayed off the beach and out of potential danger.
In any case we now camp behind the dunes in a lovely flat hard grassed area surrounded by bush. It is a 5 minute drive over the dunes to the beach. And I can only be bothered fishing when it’s light so there are no dramas. Still get crappy weather there but next weekend is gonna be in the high 20s (C) so here’s hoping. Like those guys there will be plenty of beer in case of an emergency!
