FWD Lancias are some of the few FWD cars I would persue.

Though, I am not that familiar with this one.

This is the Thema that had a de-tuned Ferrari V8, isn't it?

Yes, it features the engine in the Ferrari 308 QV, albeit with 25bhp less.

I think the Thema motor is kind of a hybrid of Ferrari design. It has the QV heads of the 308 GTB engine, but not the flat-plane crankshaft. It uses the crank from the 308 GT4.

I would take the BMW on this one. I think that it looks better plus it is rear wheel drive. That generation of BMW's are some of the best looking in my opinion. Though the Ferrari derived engine in the Lancia must put out a brilliant soundtrack.

Is it just the fact that the Thema is FWD that makes people prefer the BMW?

I dunno, I gotta go with the BMW for this one. I'm not to familiar with Lancia's and yes, that RWD does give it an extra boost.

I would take the M/// then I could toss my regular 535i.

That might not be Thema's best angle, but it looks like a Chevy Corsica + Saab 9000, or nasty. The drivetrain must make it sing though. I'd still go for the purposeful looks and design of the 5.
