Well RAW files store all the data, so basically it's like you develope the negative into the print, and yes there is some "adjusting" rather than editing involved. Nowhere near what can be done with photoshop, but slight exposure/saturation adjustments.

Well, my pic is a RAW conversion as well. I have NEVER shot a single JPEG with my camera. I actually have no idea how it performs in JPEG. Nor do I really want to know. RAW is the only sensible format.

RAW conversion isn't editing. It's making a picture look like it's supposed to look.

So can those who don't have raw capability make their photos they way the are supposed to look?

Well, you're more locked in. You have to rely on the in camera processing... In a lot of situations that processing will look great but in a lot of other situations you really need the flexibility that RAW gives you. I trust my own eye more than I trust my camera's computer

I'm not commenting on you picture taking abilities or anything.. It wasn't meant as a personal attack or anything. Sorry, if you perceived it as such.

I didn't take offense to it. I'm just trying to figure out if editing a jpg in photoshop is the same as someone doing the raw edit thing.

the way it is out of precendent is that you can edit a RAW image, because your only doing what the camera is doing but ur doing it the way it should be. eidting a jpeg in photoshop has not been allowed.

i think this is not the smartest way to set the rules. aside from the fact that it is nearly impossible to enforce, people should be allowed to make edits that you could do in camera, but i know im not gonna lock myself in to certain settings, like high saturation, when i could just decide later. so editing contrast, saturation, whitebalance, curves, and maybe a few other things, should all be allowed IMO. they dont change the picture, and it will level the playing field. this is what the rule was supposed to do, but with the amount of people using raw means it is actually dividing it more for the people with P&S cameras that dont shoot raw. i think removing dust spots should also be allowed, after all, people without SLRs have an advantage b/c they have sealed bodies... this is the direction photography is moving in, no way around it. might as well just keep up with the industry.

You don't have to edit a RAW shot, for many shots all I do is set the proper WB then just convert to JPEG, but you don't even need to do that, you can just convert straight to JPEG. But I do minor exposure adjustments to many shots, including ones I've enetered here, because I just do it, I don't make special files for the UCP comps. Don't have time. Also, different RAW programs create different look files regardless of any adjustments you make.

It better be allowed, I do it all the time.

I'm afraid this is a signature, a very pathetic one.
