    750iL?

Okay so ive been looking at a car I might get, its a 750iL but i dont really know much about BMW. Its a 5.0 V12, about 300hp, rwd, racing wheels, etc etc. But what are some common problems with these cars? I have friends that have a 98 325 and a 01 325 and they seem to have no problems. Another friend of mine has a 95 325 and it seems to have shit wrong with it all the time. The guy that has it takes very good care of it. Still anyone know of any problems that happen to the older 750's. It's a 1988 btw.

Basically im juts wondering what types of problems i could run into? The car has fairly low milage for a 88, so im hoping not too many problems occur.

The best part about the car. $3000, the guy wants to get rid of it for a 07 Mustang.

EDIT: Could problems come with the driver also?

If it's sound, then it could be a really nice buy. Just watch out for servicing bills- the bigger the engine and larger amount of toys, the more there is to go wrong.

Alternatively, you can just view it as a bargain barge and steam around in something that is trés cool

I guess for the 300Hp-s that the 750 is a E32 (1987-1994) My neighbourg had one 750iL E32, and he had problems to get new tires, I don't remeber very well but I think that the Tire dimensions weren't standar, I mean that the width or diameter were very rare and measured in milimeters. he could only buy Michelin tires specially brought from germany..and they were so expensive he managed to find other same aluminium 4 wheels with semi worn tires for less money. Then before he could worn out totaly the tires, he sold the car for 3000 €, it was a beautiful machine.

the V-12s are really maintenance heavy. and they cost a lot to service. if i remember right, the v-8 was almost as powerful, with better reliability and much better mileage.

ive actually been toying with the possibility of getting a previous generation m5 for my next automobile.

    summary:
quick summary: stylish, satisfying, and just old ebough to need a complete rebuild
    how reliable? dodgy

both the speedo mileage reading and the service light indicator are easily (and commonly) faked. Nothing but authentic documentation will guarantee the car you are being offered is legitimate

    - engine coling fan clutch and twin electric fans on air-conditioned models often fail, causing overheating, blown motors and blown budgets

    - V12 are the antichrist when they get old

    - automatic transmissions will not forgive poor servicing and costs a kings ransom to fix. slipping or clonking transmissions are not long for this earth.

    - rear suspension suspension work on iL models is very expensive. Self-levelling rear suspension system often fails.

    - flashing ABS kight often means that the wheel sensors are very rusty. Dishonest sellers disconnect aBS light for this reason.

    - like the suspension, high mileage brake systems will need complete overhaul

    - the body is well built but any repairs are bankruptingly expensive.

    - onboard computers develop severe psychosis and completely lose the plot. You could lose your life savings getting them fixed.

    - fan motors may not work at all speeds. getting them fixed is a two day job.

    - dysfunctional electric seats, especially headrests.

    - some versions use TRX alloy wheels which use a hard to obtain tyre
    sounds like a bargain, honestly

Heh heh, I'd avoid for all those reasons and the metric tyres that some people have hinted at.

Aren't Cadillacs similar in barge like silliness? Probably cheaper to repair too, buy one of those if you want a boat.

when i get solid info on it i will post it on here. As for tires it has racing rims and new tires. So finding tires wouldnt or shouldnt be a problem. I wouldnt use much of the crap in it, like the telephone. Thats james bond shit right there. I dont drive like maniac so the engine should be fine, this guy that owns it has babied it. Garage kept since hes had it. What i do know is the brakes sqeek a little. Thats the only problem it seems to have right now. Other than that hes maintained it since hes had it. I will try to find how many miles it has and everything. Body is in excelent shape also. I'll prolly go check it out this weekend with my dad. Unless he can get around to it earlier. But im not counting on that. I'm still not garenteing im getting the car, although i wish it was mine for sure though.

Given the high cost of repairs, I'd suggest getting a mechanic to check it out and see what they reckon. Preferably a non-factory BMW/euro car specialist, they're the most likely to know where to look for problems. If the guy selling it has had it serviced regularly, find out where and bug them for info. Make it seem like you're going to keep taking it there for any work on it

Well, in terms of reliability, there's a good line between the 3 Series and the 7 Series. But basically, since the 750iL is of previous generations, they, like the 8 Series hit a big problem.

At 100,000 miles, many have a tendency to have problems with their electronics. Now, that wouldn't be so bad except that the problem can become very expensive.

The V12s, as said, become hell after getting very old. They're great cars, but when it comes to age, they can become slightly-expensive investments. The 3 Series from then though are a bit of a different story though the electronics do have sometimes share that same 100K mile problem.

Age screws anything, be it low mileage, garage kept, never driven in rain, etc. Age will take its toll on any vehicle. When it does kick in, watch your wallet shrink. V12's are a mf'er to service as it is.

He doesnt like to buy things that are shit so if its not good he will pass it up for sure. Thanks for the info guys. Guess all i have to do is ask questions eh?

Sounds like an cheap car .. with maintainance & repair costs that are anything but

I recall a near-new 750 that was blighted by an unsolvable engine miss, despite repeated dealer visits. The cause of the misfire was eventually discovered to be a loose tail-light globe rattling in its housing!

(this seems like a realistic owner review)

The electrical system seems daunting, particularly on a machine of this age. Do you really want an old car this complex?

If so I salute you! If not, I'd also be checking out similar luxury/performance via decent examples of M-Benz 560 W126

yeah i know. There is a place called Dick and Walts in kokomo, they work on all cars that arent american. That is where my friend gets his BMW worked on at. The car is in near perfect condition, i know there will be problems but my dad knows Dick and Walt. (yes they are both real people lol) they work on alot of high end cars, my dads going to talk to them and see if they can work on it if anything comes up.

I'm hoping my dad comes through on this.
