The 14 cylinder version's displacement is 25,480 liters!!!! That's 24,480,000cc!!! That is friggin huge. It makes some insane torque per liter, 220.1064 lbft/liter to be exact. Although it produces only 4.2747 horsepower per liter though. (These calculations are for the 14 cylinder 108,920hp one)
If you read the specs carefully you will also note that thermal efficiency is claimed to be over 50%. A normal petrol car engine may reach a meagre 20% or so.
There is also competetion in the shape of the 14 cylinder MAN-B&W 1498MCC-C, but here the 14 cylinder version produces 108910 BHP, the 10 extra BHP for the Sulzer providing a notably better accelaration for the ship , these engines are not for big tankers, who may need less than 50000 BHP for the biggest ones currently being built. Only containerships now need these big outputs, as their service speed exceeds 25 knots (just short of 50 kph), while tankers need only 14-15 knots. Hydrodynamic resistance has similar characteristics as aerodynamics, so these extra 10 knots require heaps of power, in speed of the more favourable hull shape of containerships.

Everything considered, the efficiency of this engine is pretty incredible.

and you also have to realise that the fuel used needs to be heated before being injected. Under normal circumstances Heavy Fuel Oil (380CsT) is solid. It the remainder of the almost complete refinery process, extracting as much as possible lighter products from the crude oil.
And I thought the SL55 had lots of Torque...
