My plans for the 1993/4 Mercedes 190D 2.5TD Auto

Well, as some may know, my Grandfather may be giving me his old 1993/1994 Mercedes 190D 2.5TurboDiesel saloon when he purchases his new car sometime this year. I have kinda already started to make plans for what I want to do with the car. I'll probably keep it for a while seeing as it's a fairly decent car.

I plan to repair the scratched and cracked rear bumper and give a paint a touch up. Get the interior totally cleaned to try and get rid of the cigarette smell. I will then put in a new sound system and head unit incorporating iPod adapter and CD changer and I'll probably swap the standard hub-caps for some new Mercedes alloy rims, probably around the 17" size.

    1. Model (not the actual car)
    2. Current hub-caps

I have always thought that cars with wheels from newer models look bad, but if you like it...

For the rest of your plan I find it ok.

That's why I'm sorta looking at older Merc rims but the new C-class rims look really nice, but I'm really not so sure, I'd probably go with the old SLK ones or some old C-Class ones, 17" maximum

I have to change the current Blaupunkt headunit, it's old and shitty, can't keep a station and slides out sometimes and it's only got a cassette player, I want a CD player, some better speakers and ultimately a plug for my iPod

You'll never get rid of the cigarette smell. It will linger there forever.

I'll look into those, but I don;t think I'll do any lowering
I just want it to look slightly more sophisticated than it does now

As a smoker, I agree. However if you dont try it, you never really know

Good luck with it ! Perhaps it'd be nice to keep a report of the progress on here

W201 Mercedes are a great little car which has proven to last like a big car. If you do manage to get it, then before you spend any money tarting it up why not get the car mechanically inspected by someone knowlegable, and remedy any and all of its existing faults?

For example on examination you might find:
    - Rear suspension control arms worn (their fantastic rear suspension system has 5 arms per side (!) that means 10 bushes)
    - Front strut mounts cracked
    - Diff noise (very common)

Imho these are the most befitting mags for W201s and for bonus points are easy to clean, but they're not cheap. And I agree that 'updating' old cars with new-style mags can look maker them look stupid, too try-hard. Nor would I risk simply plonking on some absurdly big-spec wheels in the hope of gaining a handling improvement, which can compromise the great balance exhibited by the standard (or near standard) car. I've ditched those plakky hubcaps on my old bus and simply had the stock wheels powdercoated. Does your grandfather's car have the level-ride option?

    but I won't get it until 2008
    [EDIT] never mind ..
