Jeez...that's quite a list of requirements. But it is possible.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

oh heck no i wouldn't build it. but i work in a body shop and we had a 79 cutlass come in today and the owner says it's doing 550hp. it is snappy and i know the company who put it together and 383's are their specialty, and they are good at what they do.

I don't see why not, by using at least a 950 cfm carb, high perf intake manifold, a hotter cam, ported heads and headers, it should be possible if not damn close.

a 383 with forced induction could easily make 550hp I'd think...

speedy did say "without super/turbo charging or nos"!! but with a lot of work it should be achiveable.

Yeah, it can be done. If you get something like Desktop Dyno or Engine Analyzer 3.0 (which I have), you can figure out the combo that'll get you there, too.

Be forewarned though, it's not an engine that will be terribly well-suited to street driving. Even with overdrive, you'll never get good gas mileage out of it, and it'll start to have a lopey idle and lacking a little bit in low-end grunt which you need around town. It shouldn't be too too bad, but don't expect it to be at its peak on the street. 475-500hp would make a good streetable engine.

I'm with this guy. Those programs rock.

And a 950cfm Holley is going to drown that motor in air. You don't need something that big. I'd wager you could get by with a 650.

It might be possible, the pump gas is the only thing that is throwing up a flag in my head.

It may be cutting it close, but I think it'd be fine.

But you'd have to keep the compression down to be able to use the pump gas, would it still be possible to pull it off with out high compression?

550hp N/A from a 383? Easy. An LS2 is just under 383 (I'm pretty sure) and the standard exhaust + intake + cam + tune would net you 550hp easy. On say an old SBC you could still do it, maybe do some head work as well, put the compression up as required and tune it for higher octane fuel.
