Volkswagen Introduces Rabbit GTI Cup Edition

VW released the Rabbit GTI Cup.

It will use the standard production 200 hp 2.0 TFSI (which by the way is not an FSI, since it doesn't use stratified injection, like NA FSI's).

The engine will be coupled to the DSG gearbox, and as far I can see in the pics, some racing slicks are included in the mix.

Good press move by VW US, promoting the Rabbit brand by launching the R32 and the GTI Cup at the same time

    Press Release

CHICAGO – Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced that it will operate a production-based GTI Cup spec racing series beginning in 2008, offering aspiring young racers an affordable entry into professional motorsports. The new series will be sanctioned by Sports Car Club of America.

“Volkswagen as an automotive manufacturer is represented around the globe, and we have a strong history in motorsports, including successful spec racing Cup programs in more than 10 countries,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “The GTI Cup in America will underscore Volkswagen’s competitive spirit and the inspiration we take from racing into the building of our vehicles.”

While the GTI Cup racer will be optimized for track performance and safety, the heart of the GTI remains the street version’s high-tech, 200-horsepower 2.0T four-cylinder engine that produces 207 ft.-lbs. of torque. Fitted with its automated manual DSG® transmission, electro-mechanical power rack-and-pinion steering system, and advanced multi-link fully independent sports-tuned rear suspension, the production vehicle is an extremely capable car for the track.

How can the 2.0 Turbo not be an FSI engine if it has direct fuel injection?

The 2.0T in the US GTI's is an FSI motor. It says it right on the engine cover.

And having driven one or two of the Mk5 GTI's working at the dealer, I must say I'm quickly losing interest in der uberwagen, and am going to start looking at finance options for a Black Magic, Package 1, 6 speed, 2 door Gee-Tee-Eye.

All 2.0T are FSI engines. Altough I suppose you already knew that.

thats a mistake right? The TFSI is a cracker of an engine and im surprised it doesnt get rave reviews in America as much as it does here. But I guess its only a 2 litre!

It's not even about the flappy padles it's about the 30ms of changing gear and no loss of momento betwen them, i'm all for manuals, but this "auto" is better than it's manual counter part, and for me to have it in a small "cheap" car is something to take seriously.

As I have said other times the changing times are not important. The pleasure of retaining full control is. I for instance think autos are most suited to big cars rather than small ones.

Regardless of DSG being faster, it's not nearly as fun. That's reason enough for me to not want it.
