    Prius and other Hybrids

I thought I would start a discussion on Hybrids including the Prius.

Has anyone driven one? What do they go like? What are the running costs including battery replacement schedule or has someone had to replace them, and at what cost? What is the electric motor and system efficiency? Why do they run an electric motor through a transmission which has transmission losses instead of direct drive to the wheels? Has anyone seen other hybrid systems?

I have more questions but I will post them later....

Please post questions and answers as I'm sure people will be interested for future vehicle insights.

In November of 2005, when asked about the price of a new Prius battery, Toyota spokeswoman Mona Richard said, "The service parts price for a new battery is $3000, but we have not had to sell a battery yet."

I have just found out that battery replacement is expected to be at 100,000km or eight years.

I my case that would mean that I would have to change batteries every 2.5 years

In my opinion hybrids will really come into its own when they are paired with diesels and not petrol engines.

She averages 17.9 litres per 100km. When I drive it, it gets 13.5 litres per 100km, and I'm not driving like a granny either.

She actually wears out the front tyres first. and the rears a month later.

what if she works in a bakery?

you sure make your tyres last! i assume you use engine breaking and just ease of throttle really early. I do that here if the traffic light 100 yards ahead is is red and people hate you for it (for some reason?). I find that annoying.

i was sort of talking to henk4, should have said! however lack of manual would really leave me feeling out of control.

Havent driven a hybrid, but ive certainly heard from the likes of Wheels etc that whilst the engine technology is obviously something to be proud of, the actual car part of the equation is still quite dodgy. Its probably not as bad anymore now with such things as the Civic hybrid and Lexus putting the system in a few of their cars, but certainly it applies to the first Prius.
