2007 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix

After the lengthy four week break battle recommences at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmelo, Barcelona. It will be the first opportunity to see who has made the best use of the time off in the windtunnels, labs and on the test track. Both Ferrari and McLaren have talked a good game in the run up, each claiming that they have made big gains in performance since the last race. Friday's two practice sessions would indicate that McLaren are in the box-seat so far, with Hamilton topping the time sheets in Practice One, and Alonso pleasing the home fans by ending Practice Two on top. But the Ferraris certainly aren't far behind, so it's really too close to call as to who will be taking pole in tomorrow's qualy. Renault appeared to be right on the pace in the second session, but whether that was a result of big improvements in the car, or a result of running on fumes remains to be seen. I suspect the latter personally.

All the front runners are looking good. Even Renault is back up front

BMW is said to be trying out a new front wing for final practise.

Renault confirmed it was a qualifying simulation to do a fuel check. No doubt theyre still stuck with Red Bull, Williams and Toyota.

    Massa
    Hamilton
    Raikkonen
    Alonso
    Heidfeld
    Kubica
    Coulthard
    Trulli
    Kovalainen
    Fisichella

Those are the top ten for the shootout. Still too close to call between the top two teams, it's gonna go down to the wire. Brilliant stuff from DC to get into the top ten, seems that when it's actually working properly the RB3 is pretty darned quick.

no it's not. they were just simulating quali strategy and had very little petrol

about the qualis - i'm pleased with the results - it was funny to see how all the people were thinking alonso is about to get pole position and eventually he was 0,03 s slower but that's fair as earlier on he beated raikkonen only by 0,06 s

Massa pole. Then Alonso, Raikkonen and Hamilton.

It looks like an interesting race, if such a thing was possible in F1.

Felipe Massa broke Spanish hearts today by pipping home favourite Fernando Alonso to pole by just three hundredths of a second in a thrilling climax to final qualifying. It had looked like it would be between the team leaders Alonso and Raikkonen to fight it out for the pole, with Hamilton seemingly slightly heavier on fuel and Massa not quite on the pace. But he pulled a real rabbit out of the hat in the dying moments of the session to make it three poles in a row for the young Brazilian.

Alonso won't be too disappointed with his P2 as he will be right in the mix going into the first corner and will be confident of being able to fight the Ferrari's for the victory given how strong the McLaren has looked all weekend. Kimi will be slightly disappointed to be beaten yet again by his teammate, and the three tenths margin will be a slight worry for him. Perhaps he is also a bit heavier on fuel along with Hamilton. If so it will make a fascinating race in terms of strategy between the two teams if there is one driver from each team light and one driver from each heavy.

Robert Kubica put in probably his best performance of the season so far to beat his teammate and claim 5th. Qualifying specialist Trulli drove a blinder to claim 6th. In terms of battles between teammates this season I don't think anyone is doing a better job than Trulli at the moment, making self-proclaimed top three driver in the world Ralf Schumacher look a bit of a mug. Heikki Kovalainen looks to be finding his feet at last after a troubled start to the season, comfortably beating teammate Fisichella, while Coulthard will be fairly happy to be splitting the Renaults in ninth.

Elsewhere there was a disappointing time for Williams with Rosberg 11th and Wurz down in 18th. Honda have looked slightly better this weekend but are still nowhere near where they would expect to be. Super Aguri looked set to be performing more miracles but things went horribly wrong in Q2 with Davidson spinning off into the gravel and Sato's car grinding to a halt on the track. Mark Webber seems to be a magnet for bad luck at the moment, struggling yet again with reliability issues in the Red Bull and starting 19th. No real suprises with the position of the STR and Spyker teams, who both clearly have a lot of work to do to be competitive.

Yet again the run down to the first corner is going to be make or break in the battle between Ferrari and McLaren. It really couldn't get much closer at the front of the grid, which is making for some fascinating racing for the neutral fan, and plenty of nail-biting moments for the fans of the two teams. Not to mention the 160,000 partisan Spaniards cheering on Alonso. He's going to have a real tough day's work ahead of him if he's to send them all home happy like last year.
