what makes a car sound good? (in terms of engine/exhaust noise)

well. what the title says. what factors come into play in an engine noise?

from that , of course we can add all kinds of questions such as: can i make a japanese econobox sound like an angry race car (as opposed to sounding like perpetuous farting) while keeping it street legal?

of course there are so many aesthetical concepts or archetypes in" engine noise" say muscle car rumble, rev-to-the-moon, but these are consequences of decisions engineers make about engines, right? therefore, there must be some sort of common aspects, right'

exhausts are a cheap way to get a good sound of a crappie motor, just depends on the size of the tip, the bigger, the more drag style, throahty noise youll get

the smaller, the more riced, 2 stroke dirtbike noise

    otherwise, thats not my area

Engine tune, size, configuration and construction, firing order, intake, header, exhaust and muffler size, length and construction and I think that's about it.

Came here to post this. I don't know what they did, but the G35/350Z has the most gorgeous exhaust note I've heard.
i was waiting on a moment, but the moment never came. all the billion other moments, were just slipping all away. i must have been tripping, we're just slipping all away. just ego tripping.

haha it sounds great, - has this got anything to with the TDU sounds for Zonda?

I love the sound of the 3.2 in M3's, because there is a few around you learn to love the metalic shrill of such an engine.

yeah the zonda S does probably sound the best out of all the cars in TDU but the Zonda F in real life is just * *

    Hmmm... interesting question.

I love the creamy wuffle of a big American V8- something with a suitably lumpy idle, maybe a Dodge Charger R/T (1968) with huge cams.

I'm with jediali on the M3 noise, too. Sublime.

the sound of the air going into the engine sounds far better than the sound coming out, in my opinion. Also I have a particular preference for six cylinder engines. there's just something about them!

now if only we could educate all the yoofs that a good engine sound doesn't come from adding these two together.....

If you ask me, I looove the sound of the Ford GT and the Ferrari 355.

As for the G35, I remember that they said something about acoustic testing and a modified exhaust system.

There are many great sounding engines, including the old supercharged AMG V8, Volkswagen's VR6 or the Dino's V6 amongst others.
