    Alfa Romeo 1900M (AR51) 1951-1956

    Alfa Romeo 1900M

When Alfa Romeo was handed a contract to build 2000 army utility vehicles for the Italian Ministry of Defence, this is what it came up with - a skimpy four-wheel drive workhorse powered by a de-tuned version of its famous twin-cam engine. Alfa also built 50 for civilian use, which were converted into fire engines, crop-sprayers and other agricultural tools - one even had a combine harvester attachment. A 1900M was bizarrely entered in the 1952 Mille Miglia - not surprisingly, it came first in a special category for military vehicles.

This is obviously the most beautiful Italian car ever designed. It makes the Birdcage look like crap.

For all those who say Alfa shouldn't make an SUV because they're not in its heritage...

No, I'm not suggesting they should. I just find it amusing.

Italians called it the Matta, which means crazy. Go figure...

We are such a bunch of hypocrites!

We scoff at the X6M, yet when Alfa decides to throw a dry-sump Twin Cam into a Willys Jeep we all fawn over it like we would a puppy. All that said; this is just better.

    I never cared for Jeep(s).

I suppose that makes me so much of an automotive contrarian that I've looped around the automotive snob enthusiast hipsters and semi-embraced bro racers and formed an enthusiast black hole.

    Or something.

I do not care much about Jeep(s) either.

I can understand the appeal of a Suzuki Samurai; it's the mountain bike for lazy adults. but this requires at least two cars and a house in the mountains, which actually is a rather expensive proposition.

If this one fulfilled a purpose, then great, but other than that it doesn't generate much interest to me.

By the way, did you know that back in the late 50's the simpler, OHV Z-104 Pegaso V8 engine did break down a lot more than the earlier, far more complex, quad cam Z-102 V8? So maybe this Alfa Romeo-engined truck was more reliable than the competition.

    Who knows.
