Actually, a TV programme broadcasted here a few days ago highlighted just how unreliable hand-held speed detectors are.

Pointed at a static "Gatso" speed camera, the hand held unit registered that it was somehow doing 4mph down the street!

Pointed at a Mk6 Ford Fiesta that was doing 5mph through a carpark, the device registered the car at 17mph. Innaccuracy or what?

This was supposedly due to the laser beam "travelling" across the surface of whatever it hit before being reflected back tot he device.

Personally it infuriates me that the Police still think it's just, fair and reasonable to use such devices (that by taking away someone's licence could destroy lives) when they are proven to be highly inaccurate. Even the static speed cameras have proven to be unreliable. One taxi driver got a speeding ticket for doing 420mph in his diesel Vauxhall Cavalier. I never knew they were so fast!

I somewhat knew that Vauxhalls/Opels were great, but I didn't know what was great about them. Now I know...

On a serious note, my view on this subject is, speed doesn't kill inadequate speed does wheter it's under or above the legal speed limit.

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure others agree.

Going to jail for speeding? What's not goofy about it?

Here you'd get a massive ticket and lose your license, afaik you can't be put in jail for exceeding the speed limit.

I believe you'll go to jail for doubling the speed limit in the US. At least that's how it is in Florida from what I know.

Seriously? I've never even heard of someone getting jailed for speeding. My dad's friend got stopped doing 65 in a 30 and explained that he was really sorry he's late for a huge meeting etc and got off with a warning.

Did he slip a couple of $100 bills in the cop's pocket?

My friend was doing 90 on a 45 and spent the night in jail... Only a night though, no biggie, but I'd guess that something such as 150mph+ or 200mph+ could get you in a lot of trouble?

I bet jail sucks ass when you're in there for speeding and everyone else is there for like raping and pillaging.

How about speeding after raping and pillaging? Then he'd fit in

Liez. 1.8t can easily hit mach 190 while warming your latte at the same time without any of that diesel crap.

edit- I thought Top Gear found that you can beat the cameras at high speeds because they beat a camera using a TVR Cerbera, IIRC.

I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

you need to be doing 238kph to beat the ones installed in my city.

The guy who manages them told me

they fixed this after a guy did 170kph through one in a 60kph zone and was too quick for the camera

Exactly, this is what makes the situation so screwed-up. If the camera can only record speeds upto 170mph-ish, then where did 420mph come from? It was probably an administration error but it throws into question whether the camera should have triggered in the first place.

The "Beat the camera" stuff only works with fixed speed cameras; handheld laser detectors are supposedly (but refer to my above post to see contradictory claims/evidence) able to capture the maximum speed of any car that's on the street ATM.

I've been pulled over for going 29 mph on a 25 mph street at 3 a.m. with no cars anywhere to be seen, except for the cop at the opposing intersection.

    (If anyone cares)
