Evo Car of the Year fallout

From the archives of "you can't make this stuff up"...

I'll not give away the result - but the Ferrari 430 Scuderia didn't win.

Fair enough, you might say - 10 other of the 12 cars in contention didn't win either.

Not fair enough according to Ferrari:

    The mind boggles...

Meanwhile, the Aston Martin DBS didn't win either.

Their response was to retune the suspension, making the car better.

    So what else is new???

Didn't Aston get a little snippy with the Evo boys when they didn't like the DB9?

Yeah, I don't really read Evo so I'd prefer if you told us.

This would be a perfect time for white text.

    Possible.

Unless Coventry is a real Scuderia fan, I don't think he's going to be that disappointed by Evo's car of the year decision.

    From Rennteam.com:

    **Spoilers**

    1st Porsche 997 GT3 RS = 95.7
    2nd Ferrari 430 Scuderia = 94.9
    3rd Audi R8 = 93.6
    4th Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black = 91.4
    5th BMW M3 = 90.9
    6th Honda Civic Type-R = 89.4
    7th Lambo Gallardo Superleggera = 88.2
    8th Nissan 350Z = 87.6
    9th Lotus 2-Eleven = 87.0
    10th Mini Cooper S Works = 86.1
    11th Vauxhall VXR8 = 83.8
    12th Aston Martin DBS = 78.9

    Let the debate begin.

Moderator's note - I've put the results into white text format. The magazine only hit the shelves in the UK yesterday, I'm guessing 95% of people won't have picked up their copy yet. It ain't fair to spoil it for those who want to read the article for themselves. J_B

After looking at what did win, that's like chocolate being mad at vanilla. Now after all the times they tore the CLK63 Black Label apart BMW and Lambo are the ones that should be livid.

I personally think thats a silly comparison...

    6th Honda Civic Type-R = 89.4
    7th Lambo Gallardo Superleggera = 88.2

If thats doesnt represent chalk and chease I dont know what does their compareing cars from completly diffrent classes. And as previously mentioned they berated other cars yet rated them higher then cars they reviewed much more highly.

Only if they really focus. It makes it much harder to just accidentally see the result and ruin the article for yourself.

I think the Normal GT3 should be ahead of the RS.

They were quite annoyed at the fact that Evo gave a very positive review at the initial launch in the south of France, yet was quite negative in the review on British roads - the front cover was quite inflammatory too - essentially conveying the message that the DB9 was a "failure", which was a bit extreme and potentially quite damaging.

Having said that, Aston took heed and produced the Sports Pack, which was an improvement; although I seem to recall it came bottom in last year's eCoty.

I think they were pulled up to give an explanation for their "about-turn", rather than to be threatened.

Not really - just because a car has 500bhp and costs £100,000 doesn't automatically make more fun to drive than a car with 100bhp costing £10,000.

The driving experience is about more than absolute speed and a spec sheet, it is about subjective nuances such as feel, grip, control and composure.

That is the whole essence of this test - the regular features compare like with like - this is a more subjective look back at the driving experiences of the year's best cars, trying to assess which offers more involvement and entertainment, regardless of the ultimate performance or price.

If you study their reasoning, it becomes clear that they believe that the Lamborghini has several flaws which detract from the driving experience - chiefly the brakes - whilst the Civic has less compromise, and as a result is more enjoyable to drive. That does not mean they think it is faster, or over/understeers more, brakes harder, grips more than the Lamborghini, but that if you were faced with an interesting stretch of road, the Civic would be ultimately more enjoyable to attack it with.

True, they might re-evaluate their conclusions on some of the cars - but that is the point of a subjective opinion - it is not absolute, black or white - but open to personal interpretation.
