12 cylinders or walk!
Apparently he never drove the C107 (which incidently was never rallied with a 4.5-litre engine, but a 5 litre one instead). He did drive the W123 (280E), a 6th place in the 1978 Safari Rally being his best result.

A short history of W107 rallycars, which probably doesn't tell you anything you don't already know but it might be interesting to other readers
The 5-litre SLC Rally Cars
Recent pic of a genuine factory W107 rallycar
And another one (both pics taken in Fallbach in MB's storage sheds)
It looks like a W201
I saw one of them (this one!) do a beautiful rollover right in front of me at Bathurst's McPhillamy Park corner
Yes,and iirc AMG ran two in Group A at Bathurst in '86. I think they were sold to privateer Phil Ward who owned three 190 racers, including a locally-converted Super Tourer destroked to 2.0 litres

You're right it's not fully correct. If you follow nota's link about the works W107 operation you'll see that in the first event the 450SLC 5.0 was entered Sobieslaw Zasada drove one. It was the 1978 Tour of South America and they finished second.
There you a have picture, sorry for the bad quality.
