    Hennessey Venom 650R

A ZR1 fighter from the tuner Hennessey.

    From Jalopnik:

Somehow we think maybe the 2009 Corvette ZR1 pre-Detroit Auto Show embargo will be lifting sometime very soon. It's the only explanation we can come up with for why Nissan felt compelled to have an embargo on the 2009 GTR's Z06-beating Edmunds Inside Line 0-60 test lift late last night. OK, maybe that was just a freak scheduling thing -- but then, like a bolt out of the blue devil, we received a press release just past midnight from Hennessey Performance Engineering calling out the Lutzian devil with the blue highlighted engine. Apparently they weren't quite done with the 2008 Viper SRT10. The boys at Hennessey came up with an additional 78 horsepower to add atop the straight-from-the-shelf 600 found in the fang-toothed serpent, bringing the total horses up to a staggering 678 and a 0-60 time to match that of the 3.3-second GT-R. It's called the 2008 Hennessey Venom 650R, and oh, how they rushed this one to bed -- someone check out the gaping hole below the jump in the press release for "fill in original Viper model name here". Yes, somehow methinks these won't be the only high horsepower numbers we'll be comparing by the time we hit the hay tonight.

So, a German-style "horsepower war" is under way?

Well it was the Americans who started it in the late 50's/early 60's, so it's normal that once they have catched with the rest of the world they want to have another go at it.

That 2008 viper is fast as heck. That package most likely consists of just a set of headers and exhaust. They are making some VERY stout numbers on the dyno.

I liked the blue/white stripes scheme on the original Viper GTS, but I dunno, it doesn't quite fit this one. Red with with stripes would look better IMO.

Direct Quote from John Hennessey himself:

It's been a good day today with the 2008. We have been able to try a variety of exhaust combinations, and have the following results to report:

    2008 Viper Baseline = 546 rw hp / 515 rw tq

3 inch Stainless Catback Exhaust System = 561 rw hp
(15 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with High Flow Cats = 569 rw hp
(23 rw hp gain over stock)

3 inch Stainless Full Manifold-back Exhaust System with No Cats = 575 rw hp / 546 rw tq
(29 rw hp / 30 rw tq gain over stock)

The power gains are pretty even from 3000 to 6000 rpm on all of the above mods.

608 rw hp sae with Hennessey 1 7/8 long tube stainless steel headers flowing thru a 3 inch exhaust system sans cats. I think that is all its going to make until we get some ported heads on the car.
