    Zil-112/5 (1956)

Visually almost identical to ZIL-112/4 and built the same year, this car differed in two things - frame and engine. The engine was an experimental modification of ZIL-111 unit.Driven by B. Kurbatov, this car won one gold and one silver medal (1960 and 1961 respectively) in the USSR championship.

    Technical data:
    Engine - V8, 6000cc
    Output - 220 hp (4200 rpm)
    Vmax - 230 kph
    Dimensions: 4760x1960x1320 mm
Brakes - front & rear drums

It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

That Vmax - how was this tested???
A Maserati 5000 could hardly exceed 230 Kph, even if it was factory given for 280 kph. If that thing reaches 200, it gets airborne, I'd guess.

I don't think the 5000GT is a good car for comparisons. It was a luxurious grand tourer, whereas this car was designed specifically for racing. It should rather be compared with other racing cars from the time. Ferrari 500 TRC (190 hp) was capable of 260 kph, Maserati 300S (260 hp) of 290 kph, Jag D-Type (250 hp) of 261 kph. Seeing this, I won't say that 230 kph for this 220 hp-car with fibreglass body is exaggerated.

ZIL 112/5 #2. The last pic is the same as in first post, but a bit better quality. BTW, pics are named '112/4' - don't look at this, they're 112/5 - they were simply mixed in my folder for some time.

Note it was a record-setting car, as well as a racecar. The main types of racing in fifties in Soviet Union were line races and 'classic' circuit races, but held on tracks with many long straights. There was no need to care about handling and so on, so engineers could develop the speed characteristics more simply.

Aha. Thanks, that sounds more logical.
