ZJ is what my dad has. We've had exhaust problems, the lock system is a bit dodgy, and the trip computer thing seems to re-set the clock on it every 2 or 3 start ups. Lots of minor niggly things really that we never seem to have had with our Japanese cars.

It's not really a Japanese/American comparison. It's more of a ZJ any other car comparison. All the time I see people comparing the worst American cars to the best Japanese cars and then use that as proof that all American cars suck. Drives me crazy.

I think comparing the ZJ G-Cherokee to a Mazda B200(was it?) is fair

not sure which vehicle your talking about here, as the only mazda b2000 that i know of (at least here in the states) is a mini pick up truck. there was a mazda version of the explorer for a while but i'd take a ZJ over one of those generations of explorers any day. I really can't think of one japanese or European suv in the ZJ price range that isn't either a rust bucket, or have even more electrical nightmares. I'd say your closest competitor for luxury and comfort in the ZJ price range is an older land rover discovery. they go for about the same as a grand cherokee here in the US at least. One of those will not be anywhere near as reliable as a ZJ, and most likely will have just as many electrical gremlins. not to mention be much more expensive to upgrade and still won't be as competent as some of the more invested in ZJ's.

don't get me wrong I love the land rovers tho, I thought very hard about buying one. I came very close to buying one of the calloway range rovers even. But no, I really cannot name something that is a better value than ZJ's for older luxury 4x4's

edit- I think its important to note that I bought this jeep for 2300 dollars. Now even tho this is an extremely good deal, it just goes to show you how cheap one of these can be had for!

Disco ftw, but yeah, as you said, they do have a habbit for being a bit tempramental, although for people over here in the UK, they are a better choice over the Jeep, UK Fuel Prices FTL - Still love the WJ 4.7 though...
