Hi all, as LeMans were'nt aired over here in Asia,and there's little, almost no existence of media coverage; I have no idea at all concerning LeMans.

How fast are these cars? I mean compared to F1, what are the reasons behind their design? Any limitations? and whats all the LMP, GT1, GT2 thing? Do they all ran alongside? Only in France and US ?

Four different classes on the track at once makes for very interesting racing.

Try Radio LeMans. I can't think of the link, but it's English.

LMP1 = Prototype racers like the Audi R10.
GT1= GT2 and then some more power.
GT2 = Porsche 911GT3 and cars of that ilk. Think of them as something like Porsche Supercup or Super Taikyu. Why we have homologation specials.

LMP1- purpose built prototype cars. 900 kg min, max engine displacement 4L turbo petrol, 6L NA petrol (will be 7L next year), 5.5 turbo diesel.

LMP2- Similar to LMP1 except 825 kg min, 2L turbo petrol, 3.4L NA petrol, not sure about diesel. Often contest LMP1s on tighter tracks.

GT1- based on larger displacement production models. Corvette Z06, Aston Martin DB9, Saleen S7.

GT2- similar to GT1 except with smaller displacement: 911 GT3, F430, Spyker C8

I'd say the LMP's are the perfect border between GT cars (that have a street-legal variant) and Formula cars. They are in fact not prototypes of any future vehicle, instead they are purpose built race cars. Wider, lower, lighter than a GT.

Also, the rules of Le Mans are really important, because if they say the GT2 can have 3.6 liter V8 engines, the car manufacturers start producing such cars. The names of the classes changes almost every year, but the street-like and purpose-built distribution were mostly there. And of course try Wikipedia as well.

i don't see formula 1 cars doing that well on the nurburgring due to the bumps etc?

The difference between GT1 and GT2 is the number of road cars needed to homolgate a certain model (and the modifications allowed). IIRC it was 20 for the former, 200 for the latter.

So from the GT1 class is spawned the GT3 RS and the F430 Scuderia?

Both are GT2 cars.

That meaning, Le Mans had stronger impact on the automobile industry in terms of engineering, but F1 had stronger influence on marketing ?

I think F1 has had a greater influence on non-automotive marketing, but they're fairly close when it comes to advertising cars...

I've seen many ad's displaying Corvette's wins, and Audi is getting alot of attention. Also part of Porsche's massive reputation has come from Le Mans.
