    I don't believe so. I've heard on BMW forums that Steptronic was either introduced with the E46 3 Series or the E39 5 Series. Somewhere around the 2000 mark is what most guess, though.

    Have you consulted with a BMW familiar mechanic yet?

    This is probably your best bet, especially if they drive it and the problem can be replicated.

    Never happens. Whenever you take a car to have a problem sorted they can never find anything wrong with it

    I am aware of this phenomenon.

    If you got a problem like this, can your mechanic take your car out on the street to experience the problem in an attempt to diagnose it better?
