Ironically GM contracted Lotus to engineer the ZR1 Corvette's quadcam V8

The Porsche 911 could be a good candidate

A 959 is hardly "just a jumped up" 911. It is - as I am sure you know - regarded as the most technologically advanced car of it's era.
Technology advanced it may be, but it still is a jumped up 911.

Notice the doors and the windows shape for instance.

the F-40 is my pick, although when it comes to looks, i do like the countach.

the xj220 should be in this comparison too, however the F-40 would still be the best.

Also, the testarossa would have been a better match with the corvette and Lambo.

The ZR1 is probably boxing above it's weight class in this comparison, but it was the best candidate I could find circa 1989.

I think its talents are often overlooked though. For the time, and considering it was a Detroit product, it seemed quite advanced. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we have to wait for the C5 hot Vette to eclipse the power output of the ZR1?

Anyway, the XJ220 could have made a nice competitor here as torque55 said. Wasn't it introduced in 89 or somewhere there?

EDIT: Seems the XJ220 was only in showcar form in 88, production starting in 93 only. Not sure of that though, but if true it rules it out of this comparo.

I would take the F40 simply to hear those massive IHI turbos in cahoots with that V8. Other than that, I think both the Lambo and the Porsche are just as desirable as the F40.

Call me a heretic, but the F40's stylin leaves me cold. So, my choice is the 959. And would a Ferrari, or the Lambo and 'Vette, look good with mudflaps?

maybe this instead of the Vette, even though the AM has a pathetic 3 speeds.

Yeah that is one, but I highly doubt that one model was as successful for so long.

    But yes you are right.

I found one. The Porsche 962.

Introduced in late 1984, its last win was the 24h of Le Mans in 1994.

No the Le Mans winner was a Dauer 962 GT. Which was of course derived from a new for 1994 road car ...

But that road car shared a part or two with the Porsche 962...

Didn't know that. Then the Esprit would be horribly outgunned too.

    Cool.

How much does the ZR1 make anyway?

That's like saying a Howitzer isn't powerful just because it needs to be towed around.

It's still a massively advanced car, even for a 911.
