    Cayman S Sport

    From Top Gear

    Please, please don't look

If you've had a bad day at work, rest assured there's at least one person having a worse day than you.

That person books advertising for Porsche and is, perhaps at this very moment, getting the dressing-down of his life.

For the sake of simplicity, let us call this person Sebastian. Sebastian works for Starcom Motive, an ad agency that works for an agency that works for Porsche. And Sebastian made a bad mistake this week.

He sent out an advert for the new Porsche Cayman S Sport to just about every big car magazine in the UK, for inclusion in their next issues.

A nice big advert, complete with a glossy picture and lots of lovely specifications. Sebastian was happy.

However, then Sebastian discovered that Porsche hadn't actually released the Cayman S Sport yet, and that they were rather annoyed that he'd sent out all the details on a not-yet-released car to the motoring press at large.

Apparently he tried to stop them from printing the magazines, even offering to pay for the entire print run to be destroyed, but it was too late. Porsche was angry. Sebastian was sad, and perhaps a little bit fired.

So this, then, is the Porsche Cayman S Sport. We may have found out about it through a slightly circuitous route, but it sounds rather tasty.

The 3.4-litre flat-six has been tuned up from 295bhp to 303bhp, and the car has been dropped by 10mm on its springs.

We're expecting 911 Carrera-troubling performance, but then again it will cost just shy of £50,000 - almost six grand more than the Cayman S.

We phoned up Starcom Motive and they said everything was fine, as Porsche is set to formally unveil the Cayman S Sport on August 4 anyway - Top Gear mag doesn't go on sale until the 7th.

They denied there were any problems with mags that went on sale earlier than that.

We've got a feeling Sebastian won't be buying one any time soon.

    Is this real? lol

And porsche is really starting to anoy with all that squeezing for more juice out of the line-up, camon, Cayman S Sports?? a Cayman Sports Sports?? tuned from 295 to 303? WOW! Just do a Cayman Turbo and get it over already. I understand the problem that Porsche as with this car, probably the best handler of the brand, it's starting to get complicated to not let it be better than the 911. 8HP? WTF!

There's a reason Porsche is one of the most profitable car companies in the world...

They're taking a cue from the Japanese aren't they?

    Subaru Impreza WRX STi 22B

    Mazda RX-7 Spirit R type A

I'm sure there's longer special special GT edition names, but I can't think of them off the top of my head

How about the British (Lotus) and the Americans (Ford)?

They seem to love endless minor updates on their cars too.

I know Lotus sure does. I don't think Ford has a reputation for it, its just been this current Mustang. And it hasn't been constant upgrades over the previous, its been constant new versions with just a few differences, save the GT500/ GT500KR, that one fits.

They can put "S" after "S" as long as they want behind the name Cayman, that doesn't change the fact I'd still rather have a 911 Carrera (The regular one with just the Sport Chrono package will do quite nicely, thank you) or a BMW Z4 M Coupe.

Yeah courtesy of a removed limiter.

I'm sure I'll enrage the extreme-rear-engined brigade here, but I cannot understand why Porsche cannot convince their core buyer group to just let them get on with making a really good mid-engined car, that is in the 911family cost ranges. The Cayman is a great platform, and with equal gear on/in it, will outperform a rear engined car every bloody time.

    Let's have a Cayman GT2, or at least a Cayman GT3.

Porsche themselves knew many, many years ago that midengined yielded the highest ultimate limits. They are conversant with low polar moment design. Why have the flagship remain sterndrive after all these years? Yeah, they are wonderful up to a point, but a pendulum is a pendulum. Midengine rotates much more rapidly, and recovers much more readily when overdriven. We don't see too many hung-out-the-rear-engined cars in F1 or Lemans prototypes, do we?

I recognise the 911 family is a phenomenally, and relentlessly, developed motorcar. It has perhaps the most unique feel of any chassis there is. But in the end, it is let down by its engine placement. It does provide Porsche with a substantial, and very reliable, clientbase forever. But, that clientbase prevents Porsche from letting us have what they are really capable of producing.

Long live the 911 family, but let's move on! Automotive engineering doesn't just stop.
