    Need a camera

    Hey lads,

I need a camera. Before you lose it and say GET THE $4000 DSLR 598678 I want something

    1. small
    2. good battery life
    3. decent zoom
    4. droppable (ie wont shatter into a billion pieces if accidently dropped)
    5. simple (mainly for use by the missus)

    Budgeting around $300-$400AUD.

i know NOTHING about cameras/photography other then point and click so dumb it down if you can

If you get an Olympus mju(the funny u with the tail.. pronounced mew)-750(or something) you can put it in a jug of beer while it's recording a video and pour the drinks. Also it's designed to survive drops nicely, and it takes good photos.

make sure that you will have a decent opportunity to see your shots before shooting. We have a Panasonic Ixus, and shooting via the screen at bright daylight is virtually impossible (so says the Missus)

Since you're never going to buy or process film again, up the budget by a few bucks and get the Canon G9. Spectacular piece and you'll fall in love with photography... after which you'll have a camera worthy of being in love.

Buy a Powershot, they make enough of them to choose from that you can find one in both your price range and that's durable.

cheap-o Kodak digitals take surprisingly good photos. and you should see the hell my old one has been through. the pictures are still just as good. over 5 mega pixels should be big enough for anyone and it shouldn't hurt your budget at all.

I know you can get a decent FujiFilm Finepix for around your price range.

Theres a whole range so you should be able to find one that fits your criteria.

I still have my old S-series fuji. it's not small but it's hugely effective.

and it's likely to be cheap

other than that, if you did want new, I'd try maybe a Canon Digital Ixus. They run ~$290.

also look for a camera with a wide angle lens, something like the equivalent to a 27mm and image stabilization is great for low light pics!
