The Lupo GTI might be worth a look. If he can fit in it, that is.

Well I need a car for shopping and commuting in the rain. Public transport around Cornwall is pretty rubbish. Every day i walk past the Fiat garage next door and see this lovely little Panda 100hp they have on the forecourt. i know its way out of my price range but there is always the option of finance. even though that doesn't make my money problems any easier. Still I can dream. I did find a Fiesta Zetec S for £3450 but they can do finance and would consider part exchange for mine. Another option.

Well, if you want cheap and trouble free motoring, then go with no more than couple of years old small B-segment hatchback. They are about one third cheaper than a brand new car, but mechanically and visually still on a par with new ones.

For example, I paid about 6000 quid for my 2006 Grande Punto. It is pretty much idiot proof, since it's still a relatively new car and there isn't much to go wrong. And it still has a dealer warranty. Fuel and compulsory traffic insurance costs are about half less than it was for my old Fiat Coupe. I don't have insurance against vandalism, theft etc. In a word, running costs are as low as they can be.

And the next step is to have a second, a "fun" car if you will. A car that doesn't have to start every time. BTW, we Italophiles call it character.

My local garage, red Volvo V70 looks nice and there's a very tasty Saab 9-3 Turbo but they'll probably cost the earth to insure, the Fiesta you mention seems a good bet

£2,500 will get you a 2004 Dynamique 1.6VVTi with just under 30,000mi on the clock in need of some external repairs:
Auto Trader - 2004 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.6VVTi

Ideally you'd need closer to £3,000

    I did however nearly bag a 58,000mi 2003 Laguna Dynamique 1.8i Hatchback for £2,250

If he has a loan or lease on the vehicle it's required by most banks and carriers to have full coverage.
